A man with at least one gunshot wound was found dead inside a Nashville apartment Saturday morning, and police are now working to piece together what happened in the hours before emergency crews arrived. The discovery came just blocks from a Tennessee State University homecoming crowd gathered for a parade along Jefferson Street.
Emergency responders were called to the 900 block of 16th Avenue North shortly after 8 a.m., according to WSMV. Nashville Fire Department crews declared the man dead at the scene, the station reported. Police confirmed they are investigating the death as a fatal shooting.
Investigation Unfolds Near Packed Parade Route
The apartment where the man was found is situated a few blocks from Jefferson Street, where crowds had gathered Saturday morning for the Tennessee State University Homecoming Parade, per the same WSMV account. Investigators were still working to determine the events leading up to the man's death. As of about 10:30 a.m., no information on any possible suspects had been released.
The proximity to the homecoming festivities echoes a far more violent episode from two years earlier. On Oct. 12, 2024, two groups exchanged gunfire near Tennessee State University following that year's homecoming parade, leaving one man fatally shot and nine others wounded, according to NBC News. Vonquae Johnson, 24, died in that gunfire, which erupted off campus on Jefferson Street, the outlet reported.
What Happened at the 2024 Homecoming Shooting
Three children, ages 12 and 14, were among the nine people wounded in the 2024 shooting, and none of the injured were listed in critical condition, NBC News reported. Investigators believed at the time that five people with gang affiliations had opened fire and that handguns were believed to have been used, the outlet noted. A Nashville police spokesperson offered a different characterization to CNN, saying there was no indication of any gang relation and describing the incident instead as two groups opening fire while a crowd was present.
That same day in 2024, a separate crowd-trampling incident at Nissan Stadium during the homecoming football game sent three people to hospitals, according to NBC News. WJHL reported that police confirmed 10 people were hospitalized overall from the shooting and that the man who died was 24 years old.
No Confirmed Link to This Year's Parade
It remains unclear whether Saturday's apartment shooting is connected in any way to this year's homecoming celebrations. Investigators had not released that information as of the station's report, and the circumstances inside the 16th Avenue North apartment were still under review. Citywide, Nashville's homicide total dropped to 74 in 2025, a decline of nearly 27.5 percent from the prior year and the city's lowest count since 2014, according to a Nashville District Attorney General report, though that broader trend offers no insight into Saturday's case specifically.
This is a developing story, and police have not released additional details about the man found inside the apartment or any possible suspects. Hoodline will update this report as more information becomes available.
