A man was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after gunfire broke out in the 1200 block of 7th Street in Rockford, Illinois, just outside a shopping center that has seen violence before. Police say the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. near the busy commercial strip, and the man's injuries are non-life-threatening.
According to MyStateline, the shooting unfolded near a shopping center that houses the Fresh N' Faded Barbershop, Tru-Valu drugstore, and the Kwik Mart convenience store. Rockford police asked residents to avoid the area while officers and detectives worked the scene, the outlet reported. No suspect description or motive has been released, and police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.
A Familiar Stretch of 7th Street
A Familiar Stretch of 7th Street On Dec. 5, 2022, Q98.5 reported shootings on South 6th Street and in the 2100 block of 7th Street. Earlier that year, on April 13, 2022, a 24-year-old man survived after being shot in the same Kwik Mart parking lot, per a report from WTVO.
Those earlier incidents point to a pattern of recurring violence tied to this specific commercial node, even as the city as a whole has trended in the opposite direction. The 7th Street corridor in Midtown Rockford has deep roots, having developed as a Swedish immigrant commercial hub between 1890 and 1940, according to the City of Rockford.
Citywide Crime Numbers Tell a Different Story

McNamara had served as mayor since 2017 and won re-election to a third term in 2025.
