A man was found dead and a woman was hospitalized with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening after gunfire erupted inside a home in Portland's Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood early Sunday morning. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived, and details remained limited; the man's identity had not been released.

Officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded to reports of gunfire at around 1:20 a.m. at a residence near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Southeast Division Street. Officers found a man dead inside the home and a woman with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening; she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police are investigating the shooting.

The shooting was under investigation in the residential neighborhood, KGW reported.

A Neighborhood That Keeps Showing Up in the Headlines

Powellhurst-Gilbert is one of Portland's largest residential communities, home to more than 32,000 residents spread across 3.44 square miles of outer East Portland, according to 2020 census figures cited by East PDX News. It has consistently ranked among the highest in East Portland for firearm incidents. In 2025 alone, the same outlet reported, Powellhurst-Gilbert logged 41 shooting incidents, second only to neighboring Hazelwood's 50.

The area has already seen tragedy this year. On January 26, 17-year-old Kenneth Smith III was fatally shot near Southeast 133rd Avenue and Southeast Harold Street in Powellhurst-Gilbert, a case that marked Portland’s first homicide of 2026. Emergency responders had originally been dispatched after a caller reported a person who was “not breathing”; paramedics then found gunshot wounds, per the same East PDX News account.

The neighborhood was also the site of a homicide in late 2025, when 22-year-old Andrew “Andy” Nguyen was fatally shot near Southeast 142nd Avenue and Southeast Division Street. PPB homicide detectives later arrested a 17-year-old suspect on second-degree murder charges in that case, with the arrest developing after officers responded to a hit-and-run incident involving a stolen vehicle roughly a week afterward, according to the bureau.

What Oregon Law Says About Murder Charges

Should charges eventually be filed in Sunday's shooting, Oregon's sentencing framework for violent crime is notably strict. Under Oregon Revised Statutes 163.115 and the state's Measure 11 guidelines, a conviction for second-degree murder carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Rhett Bernstein Law. Measure 11 was approved by Oregon voters in 1994 specifically to set mandatory minimum terms for the state's most severe violent offenses.

The investigation remained active.
