A man's condition turned critical while he was being rushed to the hospital after a crash Monday afternoon at Riverdale Road and Fernbank Lane in southeast Shelby County, authorities said. A woman involved in the same crash was driven to the hospital in a personal vehicle, while the man was taken to Regional One Health, where he had initially been listed in non-critical condition before his status changed en route.
Shelby County deputies said the crash happened around 5 p.m. at the Riverdale Road and Fernbank Lane intersection, according to Action News 5. Two people in total were hospitalized as a result of the collision, per the same report. The man's deteriorating condition during transport underscores the severity of the wreck, though the outlet's account did not specify what caused the crash or whether either driver involved has faced citations.
A Corridor With a History of Severe Wrecks
Monday's crash adds to a troubling run of incidents along the Riverdale Road corridor in recent months. In March 2026, a Shelby County Sheriff's Office motorcycle deputy was hospitalized at Regional One Health after being struck by another vehicle along Riverdale Road near Fox Hedge, according to LocalMemphis.com. In another incident, an alleged intoxicated driver flipped an SUV into a Shelby County Fire Department fire engine at Riverdale Road and East Shelby Drive, per Firefighter Close Calls.
The broader intersection network along Riverdale Road has long drawn scrutiny. Winchester Road and Riverdale Road alone averages roughly three collisions per week, according to NST Law.
A post on the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Facebook page described “Operation Southern Slow Down” as underway July 13–18, with increased enforcement by law enforcement agencies across the Southeast.
Shelby County Leads the State in Severe Crashes
Shelby County recorded 748 fatal or serious-injury traffic crashes in 2024, the highest total among all 95 counties in Tennessee, according to state traffic safety database records cited by The Lawyers of Brown & Roberto.
A Brown & Roberto analysis identified October and August as the months with the most crashes in its data.
What exactly caused the collision at Riverdale Road and Fernbank Lane, and whether either driver will face citations, remains unclear.
