A fistfight outside on Chicago's Southwest Side turned deadly Friday morning when a man pulled out a gun and opened fire, killing a 27-year-old and leaving a 38-year-old fighting for his life. The shooting happened just before 9:30 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Maplewood Avenue in Marquette Park, according to police.

Police said the two men, ages 27 and 38, were standing outside when a male suspect approached them, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. A fight broke out between the men and the suspect, who then took out a gun and opened fire before fleeing the scene, police told the outlet.

The 27-year-old was shot in the body and rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The 38-year-old was shot in the back and armpit and taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition, according to the same police account relayed to the station. The 27-year-old's name has not been released.

Suspect Still at Large as Detectives Investigate

The suspect's age was not immediately known, and police said he fled the scene, per the station's report. Area One detectives are investigating the shooting, and authorities had not provided additional information beyond the initial details. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident, the outlet noted.

Friday's shooting adds to a stretch of gun violence that has repeatedly touched the same stretch of Southwest Side streets over the years. In August 2019, 34-year-old Harvey Adams was fatally shot about eight Chicago blocks away, in the 7300 block of South Maplewood Avenue, after two people approached him from a gangway, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. One of the two assailants fired shots before both fled back into the gangway, and Adams was later pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Other Marquette Park Shootings The neighborhood has also seen other shootings involving men caught outside. CBS Chicago reported that one man died and another was critically wounded in a separate Marquette Park shooting that happened around 8:08 a.m. in the 3100 block of West Redfield Drive, after police said an unknown suspect approached two men, ages 25 and 30, standing outside and fired at them. In a separate nighttime incident on November 16, 2025, CWBChicago reported that two men, 24 and 21, were shot at 10:04 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Maplewood Avenue, with one landing in fair condition and the other in good condition at Holy Cross Hospital.

Friday's bloodshed arrives against a backdrop of citywide violence. The Chicago Tribune's homicide tracker was current through October 3, 2026, according to the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper's tracker also found that the Austin neighborhood has recorded the most homicides citywide so far this year, with 28, and that most of the city's homicide victims in 2026 have died from gunshot wounds and were often young, Black and male.

CWBChicago separately reported that 18 people were shot across the city over the November 15–16, 2025, weekend, four of them fatally, underscoring how often gun violence erupts in clusters even as the overall yearly tally edges down. Detectives continue to work the case after police said the suspect fled the scene.
