A 35-year-old man is dead after an argument on Chicago's Northwest Side turned physical and ended in gunfire late Friday night, according to police. The shooting happened near North Kilpatrick and West Lawrence avenues in the Mayfair neighborhood, and a person of interest is now in custody.

Officers responded to the scene just before 11:30 p.m., according to ABC7 Chicago. Police said an argument between the 35-year-old and another male, whose age was not immediately known, became physical before the other man pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the victim in the head.

The wounded man was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police had not immediately released his name as of the station's report, and no other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting.

Person of Interest in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

Officers recovered a firearm at the scene, and a person of interest was taken into custody, per the same account. Area Five detectives are now investigating the shooting, and authorities had not immediately released additional details about what sparked the confrontation.

The 2026 shooting is not the only violent incident Mayfair has seen in recent years. A separate deadly stabbing in the neighborhood stemmed from a fight between a suspect and a man at an apartment on North Kilpatrick, during which the suspect stabbed the victim, according to CBS Chicago.

Past Gun Violence in the Neighborhood

In August 2020, an 18-year-old was fatally shot in the 4600 block of North Kasson Avenue after someone pulled up in a dark-colored SUV and opened fire while the teen stood on the sidewalk, Chicago police said at the time, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cook County medical examiner's office later identified that victim as Danny Brandy Jr. and ruled his death a homicide following an autopsy.

Mayfair has also seen a standoff tied to gun violence. In a separate incident, shots were fired around 1:20 a.m. in the 4000 block of West Lawrence Avenue, prompting a SWAT team to surround the building for several hours, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The gunman eventually surrendered, and police recovered a rifle from the home; no injuries were reported in that case.

Friday night's shooting remains under investigation by Area Five detectives, and police have not released further information about the person of interest or the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
