A fire tore through the kitchen of a Mesa home near Val Vista Drive and Broadway Road on Thursday, leaving at least one person hospitalized and several others evaluated for smoke-related injuries and burns. Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the roof, then went inside and found flames engulfing the stove, microwave and surrounding cabinets before managing to keep the blaze contained to the kitchen.
Crews Searched the Home as Smoke Poured From the Roof
Fire crews were called to the reported house fire on Thursday morning, according to Arizona's Family. Responding firefighters found smoke pouring from the roof of the home, per the Mesa Fire Department, before they located the source inside the kitchen. Crews searched the residence for anyone who might still be inside, though fire officials have not said whether anyone was home when firefighters arrived.
At least one person was taken to a hospital for further treatment, the station's report notes, while several others were evaluated on scene for smoke-related injuries and burns. It remains unclear how many people in total were affected or their current conditions, details that have not been released as of Thursday.
Cause Still Under Investigation
A fire investigator is now working to determine what sparked the blaze, per the same account. No timeline has been given for when that determination might be made.
Mesa has also had other fires. In one case, more than 60 firefighters and paramedics responded after a cooking fire spread from a kitchen into a townhome attic, with crews stopping it from reaching neighboring units, according to ABC15. A separate fire at a Mesa senior living community also sent one person to the hospital, as ABC15 reported. Those incidents are separate from Thursday's fire near Val Vista and Broadway and are not known to be connected.
