More Neurological Firepower Coming To The Campus
The stroke designation is also a down payment on bigger changes at the Cesar Chavez Street campus. Sutter Health is adding two neurointerventional suites at Mission Bernal by 2027, intended to expand access to advanced imaging and treatments for conditions including certain types of stroke, the Sutter Health announcement notes.
Those suites will arrive just ahead of an even larger buildout next door: a five-story, $442 million Advanced Neuroscience & Spine Care Complex under construction adjacent to Mission Bernal, expected to open in 2028. Sutter Health broke ground on the 129,000-square-foot facility in June 2025, according to the San Francisco Business Times. When it opens, Sutter plans to incorporate the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center there.
Mission Bernal opened in 2018 as a $538 million replacement for the adjacent St. Luke's Hospital, as SFBay reported at the time.
Why The Minutes Matter
Nationally, the stakes of fast treatment are stark: roughly 795,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke each year, or about one every 40 seconds, according to American Heart Association data cited by UCSF Health.
