An adult male motorcyclist is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in southeast Shelby County. Shelby County Sheriff’s Office traffic investigators responded just before 5 p.m. to the intersection of Forest Hill Irene Road and Mayfield Road, where the motorcyclist was found seriously injured.
Shelby County Fire crews transported the motorcyclist to Regional One Medical Center in critical condition, according to WREG.com. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the crash remains under investigation, and no further details about how the collision occurred have been released.
Second Critical Motorcycle Crash in Shelby County This Month
Sunday’s wreck is at least the second crash this month in Shelby County to leave a motorcyclist critically injured. Earlier in October, a motorcycle and a delivery truck collided near Pleasant Ridge Road and Twin Oaks Drive, with deputies responding just before 1:30 p.m., per Action News 5. In that crash, the Shelby County Fire Department also transported the motorcycle operator to Regional One in critical condition, while the delivery truck driver was taken to Baptist East with non-critical injuries.
Traffic was temporarily diverted while deputies investigated that earlier scene, the outlet reported. It is unclear whether the two incidents share any connection beyond both involving motorcyclists transported to Regional One in critical condition.
Broader Crash Numbers in Shelby County
Traffic fatalities are not uncommon in the county. Shelby County recorded 1,321 fatal crashes and 1,439 fatalities between 2017 and 2023, according to data compiled from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System by the FARS API. The same dataset identifies specific locations within the county where multiple fatal crashes occurred on the same road segment during that period.
The Tennessee Department of Safety also tracks motorcycle-specific crash data through its county rankings resource, which covers crash statistics from 2021 through 2025, including motorcycle crash-rate rankings by county. The department maintains a separate motorcycle crash dashboard as well, though it does not specify how Shelby County compares to other counties in current rankings.
No cause or fault determination has been released for Sunday’s crash, and investigators have not said whether any citations are expected. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has not provided additional updates on the motorcyclist’s condition since the initial response.
