Chicago's Navy Pier is about to become a runway for the world. The 9th annual World Fashion Festival lands at Bar Sol, the Latin-inspired waterfront venue at 700 E. Grand Ave., from October 15 through 17, bringing together designers, brands, and diplomats for a weekend billed as a global runway where culture meets fashion.
Founder Cesar Rolon joined WGN-TV's Spotlight Chicago to preview the weekend, describing the festival as a weekend event connecting designers, brands, and diplomats on one shared stage. Spotlight Chicago airs weekdays from 1 to 2 p.m. on WGN-TV, and more details on the festival are available at worldfashionfestival.org. The 2026 edition marks nine consecutive years of the showcase in Chicago, according to a video Rolon posted to Facebook in September.
A Nearly Two-Decade Track Record in Multicultural Fashion
Rolon's résumé in Chicago fashion circles stretches back to 2007, when he launched Latino Fashion Week. That early venture laid the groundwork for the World Fashion Festival, now a multi-day global fashion festival in the Midwest.
The festival's past editions reflect a civic-meets-cultural approach, often leaning on partnerships well beyond the runway itself.
From Macy's Walnut Room to the Navy Pier Waterfront
Last year's festival opened in a markedly different setting. The 2025 edition launched at Macy's historic Walnut Room on State Street on September 18, 2025, opening with a flamenco performance by the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, Chicago Star Media reported. Two Columbia College fashion students participated in the festival, according to Columbia College Chicago.
Moving the 2026 festival to Bar Sol places it squarely on one of the city's most visited stretches of lakefront. The venue offers private-event spaces, giving organizers a waterfront setting for the three-day run.
Columbia College Chicago's Role Behind the Scenes
The festival's reach into Chicago's academic world runs just as deep as its civic ties. Columbia College Chicago's School of Fashion has partnered with Rolon for nearly two decades, using its 618 S. Michigan Avenue storefront windows for a September display spotlighting festival designs, according to Columbia College Chicago. The college says students volunteer at the festival, where the experience can be their first time working on a live runway production.
School of Fashion director Colbey Reid said in 2025 that the festival helps challenge traditional 20th-century fashion concepts that recognize only five global fashion capitals — New York, Paris, London, Milan, and Los Angeles. That framing positions Chicago's festival as part of a broader academic argument for a more pluralistic view of where fashion innovation happens.
Runway Tickets Doubling as Fundraisers
Rolon promoted ticket sales for the October weekend in a Facebook post.
With designers and diplomats converging under one roof at Bar Sol, the World Fashion Festival's ninth year continues a pattern set nearly two decades ago: using Chicago's runway stages as a meeting point between global fashion talent and the city's own cultural institutions.
