Mark Adams, 41, of Newburgh, was released after his arraignment Wednesday morning under New York State bail laws, according to police. He faces charges stemming from an alleged assault at a home near East Parmenter Street, where police say he asked a woman he knew if he could use her bathroom before trapping and attacking her.

According to Daily Voice, officers responded Tuesday to a report of an unknown man inside a residence near 29 East Parmenter Street in Newburgh. Police said Adams asked the woman for help with the toilet after she let him use the bathroom. When she stepped inside, police said, he closed the door and began attacking her.

Police said Adams applied pressure to the woman's neck and repeatedly slammed her against a bathroom wall. People inside the home intervened after hearing the struggle; authorities said they used a knife in self-defense to free the woman. Adams fled, police said.

Health and victim-support context

NewYork-Presbyterian’s health library says strangulation can cause serious harm, including injury to the brain, spinal cord or neck structures, or complete airway obstruction. This general medical information does not establish whether the woman in this case was injured, diagnosed or treated. Officers found Adams a short time later near Liberty Street and Gidney Avenue, with help from an anonymous caller, according to Daily Voice. A report from syracuse.com also identified Adams, 41, of Newburgh, in connection with the alleged assault.

Charges and Release Under State Bail Laws

According to Daily Voice, Adams was charged with two counts of criminal obstruction of breathing, third-degree assault and second-degree unlawful imprisonment. He was held overnight and arraigned in City Court at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The case remains under the jurisdiction of local authorities, and no further details on the woman's condition or any additional court proceedings have been made public at this time.
