A proposed change to St. Louis Works could alter who directs paving funds. In September, the Board of Aldermen’s Public Infrastructure & Utilities Committee advanced Board Bill 78, which would transfer control of STL Works paving funds from aldermen to the Department of Transportation through three DOT-managed cost centers and a five-year plan, according to Citizen Portal.
The current approach is reflected in work on North Florissant Road. The stretch from Mullanphy to St. Louis Avenue is being repaved, with part of it already milled and prepared for paving. First Alert 4 reported the project cost is estimated at $400,000 to $500,000.
The North Florissant work is part of a broader effort estimated at $1.2 million, including nine side streets, First Alert 4 reported. City crews paved Montgomery on Tuesday, and eight other side streets are slated for repaving. The station reported that the streets department expected work on North Florissant to finish by the end of October.
Ward 14 Alderman Rasheen Aldridge, whose position is listed by the City of St. Louis, said the road connects North City with downtown and had received patch repairs, but no full repaving, over the previous decade. First Alert 4 reported that he said he sets aside money each year for street work and chooses projects based on need.
First Alert 4 reported that the project is funded through STL Works, ward funds, and Ward Capital. The station’s reporting on the work and Aldridge’s account of its funding describes a project under the current arrangement, while Board Bill 78 would change how STL Works paving funds are managed.
