A second man has been arrested in the fake-police abduction and killing of 22-year-old Eddrick Bethune, whose body was found on a South Miami-Dade roadway shoulder the morning after he was dragged from his North Miami apartment complex. Naquon Jahrell Fagan, 25, now faces murder, kidnapping, and other charges, authorities say, in a case that escalated to a shootout inside Bethune's own apartment after his abduction and ended with his body dumped roughly 40 miles away.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, investigators say Fagan rented the 2026 Toyota Camry that was allegedly used in the kidnapping, and a rental agreement obtained by police helped tie him to the vehicle. Surveillance video reportedly showed Fagan using the Camry to buy black gloves at a Family Dollar just hours before the crime, and cellphone data is said to have placed his device in the area during that same purchase.
The scheme unfolded the night of October 3, when Johnson allegedly arrived with four other men at the Aliro Apartments at 14040 Biscayne Boulevard and waited for a target to leave the building, per the outlet's reporting. That address matches the location described by the Miami Herald, which reported that detectives tied the night's violence back to a shooting around midnight at the same complex.
A Fake Traffic Stop Turns Into a Shootout
When Bethune exited the building, the men allegedly pulled up in the Camry with blue and red lights flashing, according to the NBC 6 account. Two suspects reportedly got out armed and wearing shirts marked “police,” then handcuffed Bethune, took his keys, and threw his phone across the parking lot. WSVN reported that surveillance footage captured men wearing shirts bearing the word “police” on the back, reinforcing witness accounts that the suspects appeared to be posing as officers.
Johnson and two other suspects then allegedly used Bethune's keys to enter his apartment, where a second victim inside armed himself with an AK-47-style weapon, NBC 6 reported. Johnson and that second victim exchanged gunfire inside the unit, and authorities say Johnson was struck multiple times. Unable to escape, Johnson and two others reportedly jumped from a third-story bedroom window, with cellphone video said to show the men falling several stories during the escape attempt.
Body Found 40 Miles South, Car Torched
Outside, as suspects fled the apartment complex, one appeared to drop cash, according to NBC 6's reporting. The other suspects in the Camry allegedly drove with Bethune to Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 189th Avenue, where Bethune was shot multiple times. WSVN reported that police found blood at a shattered apartment window and money strewn about on the ground back at the complex, physical evidence that lined up with witness accounts of the struggle.
A Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office captain discovered Bethune's body on the roadway shoulder at about 7:25 a.m. the next morning, per NBC 6's account; CBS News Miami similarly reported that he was later found dead in South Miami-Dade near Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 189th Avenue. WSVN reported that the location was roughly 40 miles from the apartment complex where the abduction began. Deputies told WSVN that Bethune had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators later found the Camry near Southwest 248th Street and 157th Avenue, authorities say, and the car had been intentionally set on fire after the murder. The Miami Herald reported that the burned vehicle matched the one driven by the suspects, giving detectives another thread connecting the abduction scene to the location where Bethune's body turned up.
First Suspect's Arrest and Hospital Stay
Devorise Carl Johnson, 21, was arrested on October 15; after being released from the hospital on Wednesday, October 21, he was taken into custody and booked into jail, facing charges that include first-degree murder, kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated battery, shooting a deadly missile, armed burglary, armed robbery, and falsely impersonating an officer, according to NBC 6. CBS News Miami said an arrest form listed kidnapping with a weapon or firearm. He had reportedly been dropped off at Jackson North Medical Center for treatment after being shot during the apartment gunfight, and no attorney information was available for him as of that report.
CBS News Miami reported separately that Johnson now faces several charges, including first-degree murder and kidnapping with a weapon or firearm, consistent with the broader charge list detailed by NBC 6. Another video reviewed by the Herald showed two men beating and dragging a man into a car, matching the sequence of events described across multiple accounts of the abduction.
Fagan's arrest marks the second break in a case that investigators pieced together through surveillance footage, cellphone data, and a torched getaway car. The supplied court record system maintained by Miami-Dade County tracks felony and misdemeanor filings along with civil and municipal matters, though specific charging documents for Fagan were not available in the material reviewed for this report.
