A predawn burst of gunfire in a south Charlotte parking lot left one man dead and another hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries early Sunday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Officers were called to the 200 block of West Woodlawn Road, a commercial strip near Interstate 77, around 2 a.m. after reports of two people shot.

According to The Charlotte Observer, officers first located a male victim with a gunshot wound in the parking lot. “Upon arrival, we located the victim, a male victim, who had a gunshot wound. He was treated and transported to the hospital,” Major Gene Lim said, according to the outlet. That victim is expected to survive, as police have said his injuries are non-life-threatening.

While investigating that scene, officers discovered a second person who had been shot elsewhere in the same parking lot. “We found another victim who had been shot as well,” police said, per the same account. Officers performed life-saving measures on that second victim, but the person “succumbed to those gunshot wounds,” according to the report.

Victims Not Yet Identified

CMPD has not released the identities of either person involved in the shooting. The Charlotte Observer reported, citing CMPD, that “His identity has not been released,” leaving the broader circumstances of the shooting, including what led up to it, still unclear.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the CMPD Homicide Unit at 704-432-8477. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

A Stretch of Road With a Troubled Recent History

The shooting happened just off a stretch of road that has seen repeated violence in recent months. The 4800 block of Wallingford Street, located just off West Woodlawn Road, had a body found there for the second time in six weeks, as previously reported by The Charlotte Observer. Wallingford Street itself is only about two blocks long, running just east of I-77 and lined mostly with office space and hotels.

One of those earlier cases involved 53-year-old Ronald Neville, who police believe was killed while being robbed in October 2025. Three men were later arrested and charged with felony murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony conspiracy in that case. A separate shooting in the area, reported by QC News, saw officers respond at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday to a gunshot victim in the 4800 block of Wallingford Street, where the person was pronounced dead at the scene; CMPD described that incident as isolated and said people staying nearby were not in danger.

Citywide Crime Trends Mixed on Violence

The Woodlawn Road shooting comes as CMPD reports an overall decline in crime across Charlotte so far this year. Citywide crime fell 16% during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to QCity Metro. That decline included an 8% drop in violent crime and a 17% reduction in property crimes, with aggravated assaults falling 4% to 2,043 offenses from 2,127 a year earlier.

Even so, homicides ticked up slightly during that same stretch. CMPD recorded 40 homicides in the first half of 2026, compared with 39 during the same period in 2025, per the outlet's report. Police Chief Estella D. Patterson has said the department's homicide unit currently clears about 75% of all cases, though it remains unclear how Sunday's shooting will factor into that count.

No arrests have been announced in connection with the West Woodlawn Road shooting as of Sunday's report. CMPD continues to urge anyone with information to come forward through its Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers as the investigation continues.
