Young Patronesses of the Opera is marking 71 years of bringing opera to South Florida with a gala set for Friday, November 13, 2026, at the InterContinental Miami, 100 Chopin Plaza in downtown Miami. This year’s event, themed Opera Meets Jazz, will fold a performance by the Mustafa on Sax Band into an evening built around music, education and the region’s cultural community.
According to Miami's Community Newspapers, the band is led by Melton Mustafa Jr., described as a three-time Grammy-nominated South Florida jazz musician, educator and bandleader. The pairing echoes the elder Melton Mustafa's own résumé: a trumpet player, arranger, composer, producer and educator who, according to meltonmustafa.com, has shared stages with the Count Basie Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, among other top jazz names.
The gala will welcome YPO members, patrons, community leaders and arts supporters, and organizers say proceeds will benefit the group’s music education and community outreach programs, per the same report from Community Newspapers. Those proceeds are intended to support YPO’s educational programs and its broader mission of inspiring new opera lovers.
A Nonprofit Built Around Classroom Opera
Young Patronesses of the Opera describes itself on its own website as cultivating “the understanding and appreciation of opera through youth education in South Florida,” according to ypo-miami.org. The organization says its programs are meant to inspire intrigue and nurture passion for opera and classical music in future generations, and it offers free music resources so teachers can bring opera lessons directly into the classroom.
That in-school focus has a track record. During the pandemic, the group’s In-School Opera team sent links to previously performed children’s operas to music teachers across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the organization’s news page notes. When in-person programming resumed on January 11, 2023, YPO brought a performance of the children’s opera Hansel and Gretel to more than 32 elementary and middle schools across South Florida, with the run continuing through March 16 of that year.
Competitions and Community Reach
Beyond classroom visits, the group has highlighted its national voice competition as a cornerstone of its mission, reporting that it awarded $44,000 at its 30th National Voice Competition. It has also pointed to its reach with younger audiences, noting that its Little Red Riding Hood opera was performed for 15,000 children, according to the organization's news page.
Community Newspapers reports that Young Patronesses of the Opera is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit comprising more than 200 women volunteers, and that the group supports Florida Grand Opera and its educational initiatives. The outlet also notes the organization operates teacher and Girl Scout workshops alongside its in-school opera programming for elementary students.
On its donation page, YPO states plainly that its programs rely on the generosity of supporters, with donations and grants funding efforts to support emerging vocal talent and train music educators, per the organization's donate page. The upcoming gala follows a similar save-the-date pattern from recent years — the group previously flagged its 69th Annual Event for December 7, 2024, on its website.
What's Still to Come
Organizers say additional details on programming, tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the November 13 gala will be announced in the coming weeks, according to Community Newspapers' report. For a nonprofit built on seven decades of introducing South Florida children to opera and the performing arts, the Opera Meets Jazz gala is being framed as both a celebration of that history and a fundraiser to keep the classroom programs running.
