A man died after a driver who police say suffered a medical episode struck him near 23rd Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road in north Phoenix on Sunday evening. Officers responded to reports of a crash around 6:15 p.m. and found the man unresponsive with serious injuries. Phoenix Fire Department crews took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, AZ Family reported.
Police said an initial investigation indicates the driver experienced a medical episode just before hitting the pedestrian. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to the report. Authorities had not released the victim’s identity or the driver’s condition, and had not said whether charges might follow.
A local crash in a wider safety context
The circumstances of this collision remain under investigation, and broader safety assessments do not explain what happened at this intersection. They do show why pedestrian safety is a statewide planning concern: the Arizona Department of Transportation says its first Active Transportation Safety Action Plan was developed in response to rising pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities, most of which occur on local roadways.
In that 2024 plan, ADOT ranked Phoenix first among its recommended Safety Improvement Areas. The ranking is a citywide assessment, not a finding about 23rd Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road or the cause of Sunday’s crash. Phoenix also has a citywide Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan: the City of Phoenix says the City Council approved it in September 2022 and allocated $10 million annually for implementation.
The crash scene was expected to remain closed while detectives investigated, AZ Family reported. Police have not released further details about the driver’s medical episode or the events leading up to the collision.
