Pinecrest Gardens has announced its 2026-2027 music season at the Banyan Bowl amphitheater, stacking the historic venue's calendar with jazz, salsa and bossa nova acts running from this month through next spring. The lineup folds together three distinct concert series, each built around a different strand of the gardens' performing arts programming.
According to Miami New Times, the season includes the 17th annual Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens series, the fifth annual Tropical Nights series, and the second annual Sound Sessions series. Sound Sessions kicks off on October 24 with Hazmat Modine, a band that has won France's Charles Cross Award for best blues album and toured with Brian Wilson, Norah Jones and Fiona Apple, with an optional VIP pre-show wine tasting and gardens stroll offered to ticket holders. The series returns on February 6, 2027, with Fernando Perdomo delivering what the outlet describes as a genre-spanning evening of rock, Latin, pop and progressive sounds.
Jazz Series Opens With Gatsby-Era Glamour
Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens opens November 7 with vocalist Allyson Briggs, known as the Glamour Girl of jazz and the singer of Fleur Seule, joining the Dan Gabel Big Band for an evening billed as Gatsby-era glamour paired with Great American Songbook standards. The Dan Gabel Big Band is an 18-piece swing orchestra that regularly pairs with Briggs on period-accurate tribute concerts, according to the Pinecrest Sun.
The jazz series continues through the winter and spring with Allan Harris performing A Nat Cole Christmas on December 12, the Sweet Tooth Jazz Band bringing a speakeasy-style jam session with Carnegie Hall polish on January 16, 2027, and the Lucy Yeghiazaryan Trio offering a Valentine's Day Eve experience on February 13, 2027. Jukebox Saturday Night closes out the run on March 13, 2027, with a program of Hollywood scores from Henry Mancini's songbook, per the seed story's reporting.
A Centennial Tribute Anchors Tropical Nights
Tropical Nights, now in its fifth year, celebrates bossa nova, samba and Latin grooves across the season. Orquesta La Oferta launches the series on December 19 with a salsa tribute to El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, and the series returns February 27, 2027, with Baila Nova performing bossa nova and samba in honor of Antônio Carlos Jobim's centennial. Cortadito closes the series on April 3, 2027, with a Buena Vista Social Club tribute.
The Jobim tribute threads through the broader season: Eliane Elias, who has won two Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammy Awards, returns to honor the composer's centennial. The timing lines up with worldwide celebrations of Jobim's hundredth birth anniversary on January 25, 2027, and with the release of an Elias album and tour tied to the milestone, according to Connect Brazil. Jobim co-created bossa nova and composed global standards including The Girl from Ipanema.
A Historic Venue With Deep Roots
The season's home base, the Banyan Bowl, is a 500-to-530-seat open-air amphitheater sheltered beneath a geodesic dome originally built in the early 1940s and comprehensively refurbished for acoustic performances in 2011, according to Wikipedia. The dome originally served as a bird-show arena during the site's Parrot Jungle era. Per the seed story, the venue was also selected as Miami New Times' 2025 Best of Miami pick for best outdoor venue, and Pinecrest Gardens now draws more than 150,000 visitors annually while holding ArbNet arboretum accreditation for botanical excellence.
Pinecrest Gardens occupies the former site of Parrot Jungle, which opened December 20, 1936, founded by Franz and Louise Scherr on a 20-acre tract where birds flew free. The attraction drew visitors including Sir Winston Churchill and Jimmy Carter over the decades, and its flamingos famously featured in the opening credits of Miami Vice, according to MiamiHal. The Village of Pinecrest purchased the 14-acre property for $25 million on December 17, 2002, with grant assistance from the Florida Communities Trust, reopening it as a municipal botanical garden on March 8, 2003, and the village later removed it from the general municipal park system to protect its botanical focus, according to the Lifestyle Media Group. The site was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Parrot Jungle Historic District on October 17, 2011.
Leadership Points To Ongoing Investment
Cristina Blanco, who has served as executive director of Pinecrest Gardens since September 2022 after more than 25 years in leadership roles including Chief Communications and External Affairs Officer at United Way Miami, framed the season as reflecting what makes the venue distinct. The seed story's reporting, per Miami New Times, quotes Blanco saying that nature, improvisation and unique audience experiences are the beauty of Pinecrest Gardens, and that she considers the gardens an overlooked cultural success story in Florida.
The gardens have also been in the midst of a multi-phase historic infrastructure renovation covering the Lakeview Terrace, Pergola, Patio and Upper Picnic Tables overlooking Swan Lake, according to Pinecrest Gardens. The Village of Pinecrest's purchase of the property is credited with preserving it from private real estate redevelopment, a decision that today supports a performing arts calendar in a village where the 2024 median household income reached $206,417, per the U.S. Census Bureau. Tickets for the full 2026-2027 music series are available through Pinecrest Gardens.
