Memphis police officers raced to the 1000 block of Faxon Avenue at 4:50 a.m. Friday after reports of gunfire, but as the sun came up, investigators still had not said who was hurt or who pulled the trigger. The shooting is another recent instance of gunfire on this North Memphis corridor.
According to WREG, officers were called to the scene early Friday morning, and the identity of the shooter remained unclear as the investigation got underway. The extent of any injuries from the shooting has also not been confirmed. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
A Block With a Troubled Recent History
Friday's shooting is not an isolated event for this stretch of Faxon Avenue. In April, Memphis police responded to another overnight shooting on the same street that left a man critically injured with a gunshot wound to the right eye, with emergency responders transporting him to a hospital in critical condition, as previously reported by Action News 5 and detailed in Hoodline's earlier coverage of a man shot in the eye. Just months later, in August, police responded to a fatal robbery shooting in the 2800 block of Faxon Avenue, where a 19-year-old suspect was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Memphis police and task force members responded together in the case, which Hoodline covered when a teen was charged with murder.
The street's history of disorder stretches back further still. In April 2024, officers responding to an overnight prowler call in the 1000 block of Faxon Avenue had their own marked squad car stolen, only to find it wrecked more than an hour later in North Memphis near Mud Island Road, according to WATN-TV. The vehicle reportedly sustained heavy rear damage before it was recovered.
Part of a Broader Pattern Across North Memphis
Part of a Broader Pattern Across North Memphis Friday's shooting also follows a string of recent violence elsewhere in North Memphis. Seven days earlier, a Thursday evening shooting on Chelsea Avenue left a man and a woman critically injured after two male suspects fled in a red Honda, with the woman reportedly reaching a nearby fire station to seek emergency help, as reported by WREG in Hoodline's coverage of the North Memphis Chelsea Avenue shooting. Just two days before Friday's incident, gunfire also broke out before dawn in nearby Binghampton on Broad Avenue, a case that similarly left no suspect named, according to Hoodline's prior reporting.
The Memphis Police Department's Tillman Station Precinct is located at 426 Tillman Street.
Citywide Crime Falling, but Pockets Persist
The recurring violence on Faxon Avenue stands in contrast to broader citywide trends. Major violent crime in Memphis dropped 31.5 percent during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period the year before, reaching a 15-year low, according to data from the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and the University of Memphis Public Safety Institute. Citywide violent crime peaked in 2023 and has fallen 45 percent between early 2023 and mid-2026, per the same report.
Law enforcement has also leaned on multi-agency task forces. The Memphis Safe Task Force includes Memphis Police alongside federal partners such as the U.S. Marshals Service. The Homicide Bureau had an 81 percent clearance rate.
If a suspect is identified, any charges would depend on what investigators find.
For now, the case remains open, with no suspect named and no injuries confirmed. Tipsters can contact CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County at 901-528-CASH. WREG said it plans to update its reporting as more information becomes available.
