The ramp connecting southbound I-15 to eastbound I-84 at Exit 340 in Riverdale went dark Friday night and will stay that way until Monday morning, part of a weekend-long push by state crews to slide a massive new bridge span into position. Drivers who rely on that interchange are being told to find another way around through at least 6 a.m. Monday.

Weekend Closure Kicks Off a Two-Phase Bridge Slide

The ramp closed at 10 p.m. Friday and won't reopen until 6 a.m. Monday, according to UDOT. During that window, crews plan to slide half of a new bridge into place over the interchange, a construction method that lets workers assemble a span off to the side before shifting it onto its permanent supports. Utah DOT previewed the work on Facebook Friday with a post titled “You ready??”, urging followers to stay tuned for the action as demolition and bridge-sliding got underway.

This is only the first of two scheduled shutdowns at the same spot. The ramp is set to close again from Oct. 30 through Nov. 2 so crews can slide the other half of the new bridge into place, the station notes. Splitting the work into two weekend closures lets crews install the span in stages rather than shutting the interchange down for a longer stretch all at once.

Demolition Work Also Planned on I-15 in Weber County

Beyond the ramp closures, UDOT has also planned to shut down I-15 in both directions in Weber County to clear the way for demolition of the old 4400 South bridge in Riverdale, according to a separate report from KUTV. That demolition targets the former structure being replaced as part of the broader project in the area.

The ramp work is one piece of a larger effort to replace three aging bridges in Riverdale, a project the same station's report says is expected to wrap up this fall. The 4400 South bridge over I-15, the first of the three structures tackled in the project, was already rebuilt and reopened back on June 16, per UDOT's project page. Work has since continued on the two ramp bridges carrying traffic between I-15 and I-84 over 4400 South, the project's update notes.

What Drivers Should Expect Through Early November

For now, the practical takeaway for commuters is straightforward: the southbound I-15-to-eastbound I-84 ramp at Exit 340 is closed through Monday morning, and it will close again for several days starting Oct. 30. Drivers who regularly use that connection between the two freeways should plan alternate routes for both weekends while the two halves of the new bridge get slid into place.
