A road in Davie collapsed after a water main break, according to police.
The collapse was reported by CBS News Miami, which captured video of the damaged roadway. Police told the outlet that a water main break was responsible for the road collapse.
Road collapses tied to water main breaks are not unheard of in Florida or beyond, though every incident plays out differently. In Hollywood, a massive water main break left neighbors without water and prompted officials to put roadway contractors on standby for pavement repairs once the pipe itself was fixed, with drivers urged to find alternate routes, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
Similar Collapses Elsewhere
Other cities have dealt with comparable failures in recent years. A water main break caused a road to partially collapse in Brandon, Florida, with drivers advised to avoid the area, per WFLA. In Beaumont, a pickup truck driver was able to exit safely after a water main break caused the road beneath them to collapse, city officials told ABC13 Houston. And in DeLand, a similar break opened a large crater and shut down a local road, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
One of the more dramatic examples came out of East Baltimore, where a water main break collapsed a road and trapped a vehicle, partially submerging it in water. Crews there kept the impacted roadways closed for an extended stretch while completing backfilling operations, a compaction test, and permanent repaving, CBS Baltimore reported.
