A 23-year-old Rockford woman is behind bars after a predawn crash at the intersection of Mulford Road and Guilford Road killed a passenger and left another driver with life-threatening injuries early Saturday. Taylor Schwenk now faces one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI in connection with the wreck, which also sent a third person to the hospital for treatment.
The crash happened around 2:25 a.m. Saturday at the busy Rockford intersection, according to MyStateline. A passenger riding in the first vehicle later died from injuries suffered in the collision, while the driver of that same vehicle was left with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle involved was treated and released, the outlet reported.
In all, three people were taken to a local hospital following the crash, per the same report. Authorities have not released the identity of the person who died, according to Rockford News First.
Charges and Custody
Authorities arrested Schwenk and booked her into the Winnebago County Jail, the station's report states. She is awaiting a pretrial hearing, according to the same account. The reckless homicide count and the two aggravated DUI counts stem directly from the fatal crash, per the report.
A Familiar Stretch of Road
Mulford Road has seen deadly crashes before. In May 2023, a two-car collision in the 1900 block of North Mulford Road killed 43-year-old Veronica Cortez, whose identity the Winnebago County Coroner's Office confirmed. Investigators said she was driving with a juvenile passenger at the time. That passenger suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, while the driver of the other vehicle, an 80-year-old man, was reported in critical condition, according to WIFR.
DUI Arrests Have Climbed Across Rockford
Saturday's fatal crash comes amid a documented rise in drunk driving enforcement across the city. Rockford police recorded 476 DUI arrests in 2025, a 32.6 percent jump from the previous year, according to the Rockford Register Star. That total ranked second among Illinois municipal agencies in the newspaper's survey. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, meanwhile, reported 230 DUI arrests of its own in 2025, also the second-highest total among Illinois sheriff's departments listed in the data. Rockford Police Investigator Ryan Lane led all Illinois officers with 146 DUI arrests that year, the Register Star reported.
No further details about how the crash unfolded or which vehicle Schwenk was driving have been made public. Her case remains pending as she awaits her next court date in Winnebago County.
