A driver was killed and a passenger left with life-threatening injuries early Tuesday after their car slammed into a tree in Rolling Meadows, scattering wreckage across a front lawn and the surrounding street. Rolling Meadows police were called to the 2100 block of Kirchoff Road at about 2:19 a.m. for the crash, which closed roads in the area for several hours overnight.
ABC7 Chicago reported that the driver crashed into a tree, according to ABC7 Chicago. Both occupants were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the driver later died. The passenger remained in life-threatening condition, the station reported. Police have not released the identities of either victim.
Debris Scattered Across Lawn and Street
Photos from the scene showed a heavily damaged sedan resting on the front lawn of a home, with debris strewn across the grass and pavement, as reported by NBC Chicago. During the 4 a.m. hour, the stretch of Kirchoff Road between Wilke and Oriole roads remained shut down as crews worked the scene. Officers collected evidence while the area remained blocked off.
By 7:45 a.m., all roads in the area had reopened to traffic, according to the same ABC7 report. CBS Chicago also confirmed that police were investigating the crash as a single-vehicle collision involving two occupants, with the driver's identity still not released as of Tuesday morning.
A Stretch of Road With a History of Crashes
Kirchoff Road has drawn scrutiny from local officials before. Back in 2021, Rolling Meadows police stepped up patrols along the corridor after at least two serious crashes occurred within about six weeks, according to a search snippet from the Daily Herald. A separate Daily Herald snippet referenced a crash analysis from 2020 to 2024 that found seven vehicle crashes at an intersection along the road, though none of those involved pedestrians.
Tuesday's crash also echoes an earlier Rolling Meadows tragedy. In June 2020, a single-vehicle crash into a tree on St. James Street, just east of Meadow Drive, killed a driver and injured a passenger, according to the Arlington Cardinal. No further details on the cause of Tuesday's crash, including speed or road conditions, have been released.
