A passerby found a 33-year-old man shot inside a parked car early Monday in Roseland, and he later died at a hospital, Chicago police said. Officers responded to the 11300 block of South Edbrooke Avenue just after midnight, where the man was discovered with a gunshot wound to his neck.

The man was found at 12:35 a.m., according to police, as Chicago Sun-Times reported. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died, police said. Area 2 detectives have taken over the investigation into the shooting.

No further details about what led up to the shooting, or about a possible suspect, have been released. The stretch of South Edbrooke Avenue where the man was found sits in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side, an area that has seen other fatal shootings in recent years.

A Nearby Street With a Violent History

Just a few blocks away, in the 10900 block of South Edbrooke Avenue, a 77-year-old man named Alfred Shelton was fatally shot inside a home in 2025. ABC7 Chicago reported the shooting happened at about 3:12 a.m., while the Chicago Sun-Times, citing witnesses who heard gunfire, put the time at around 3:10 a.m. Shelton was found with gunshot wounds to his head and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sun-Times.

Roseland has seen other violence as well. In a separate shooting reported by ABC7, a 30-year-old man was found unresponsive in the 0-100 block of West 112th Place around 11 p.m., shot in the abdomen and head; he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Homicides Citywide Remain Elevated

The Edbrooke Avenue shooting adds to a year that has seen Chicago homicide numbers running close to, and at times slightly above, the prior year’s historically low pace. Chicago recorded 328 homicide victims through Oct. 3, according to a tracker maintained by chicagotribune.com, which also noted that most of this year’s homicide victims died from gunshot wounds. The city had logged four consecutive annual decreases in homicides through 2025, per the same tracker.

Earlier in the year, the picture was somewhat different. Chicago recorded 210 homicides through the end of June, an increase of nearly 6% compared to the first six months of 2025, according to news.wttw.com. The outlet also reported 686 shootings and 858 shooting victims citywide through that same midyear point, a 4% year-over-year increase in shootings.

No arrests have been announced in connection with the Edbrooke Avenue shooting as Area 2 detectives continue their investigation.
