A Mooresville house fire that sent multiple emergency crews racing to Wal Hollow Lane just after 8 a.m. Thursday has ended with a 44-year-old Rowan County woman behind bars, accused of deliberately setting the blaze at a home where she knew the people living there. No one was inside when the fire broke out, though a dog trapped in an enclosed porch had to be evaluated at the scene.
Detectives with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office arrested Clarrisa Nicole Stokes in connection with the fire, according to the Salisbury Post. Firefighters were dispatched to the residence shortly after 8 a.m. on Oct. 22 and managed to extinguish the flames before the home sustained extensive damage, the outlet reported. WCNC similarly reported that multiple emergency crews responded to the Wal Hollow Lane address that morning.
Witnesses told investigators they saw someone leave the area shortly before the fire was discovered, per the same Salisbury Post account. The Rowan County Fire Marshal's Office later determined the fire was incendiary in nature — meaning it had been intentionally set rather than accidental.
Dog Found Safe on Enclosed Porch
While the home was unoccupied by people at the time the fire was set, a dog was inside an enclosed porch area when flames broke out. The animal was evaluated afterward and found to be unharmed, the report notes.
Investigators determined that Stokes was known to the victims, though the nature of that relationship has not been detailed in available accounts. That detail has fueled questions about what prompted the fire, though no motive has been disclosed.
Arson, Breaking and Entering, Animal Cruelty Charges
Stokes was arrested on charges of second-degree arson, breaking and entering, and cruelty to animals, the article notes. Under North Carolina law, arson is divided into two degrees as defined at common law. The state's animal cruelty statute classifies malicious torture, mutilation, maiming, cruel beating, disfigurement, poisoning, or killing an animal as a Class H felony; it separately addresses killing by intentional deprivation of necessary sustenance, while other conduct under subsection (a) is a Class 1 misdemeanor, according to the North Carolina General Assembly.
Stokes is currently being held at the Rowan County Detention Center without bond, per the same account. It remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed in court or whether she has retained an attorney.
