A cabaret show shaped by audience questions is coming to San Francisco on Halloween Eve. Richard Skipper will make his debut at Feinstein's at The Nikko with “Richard Skipper Celebrates! Life Lessons from Legends,” an interactive evening in which questions submitted by the people in the seats help shape the stories, songs and conversations.
According to San Francisco Chronicle arts and culture columnist Tony Bravo, the performance marks Skipper's first appearance at the venue and arrives as part of his 2026 Autumn Tour, a run described by events.org as his “long-awaited debut” at Feinstein's at the Nikko. The venue's own calendar lists the show simply as “Richard Skipper Celebrates! Life Lessons from Legends,” according to Feinsteins at the Nikko.
The format is the hook: attendees submit questions ahead of time, and those questions shape which stories, songs and conversations fill the evening. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Skipper does not know what will happen next in each performance, with the audience helping choose what happens next.
A Night Built From Decades of Backstage Friendships
Skipper draws his material from real relationships built over a long career, including ties to Carol Channing, Jerry Herman, Julie Wilson, Marilyn Maye and Lucie Arnaz, the events.org listing notes. He also counts Melissa Manchester and Lesley Ann Warren among the entertainers he has known. Skipper is closely associated with his own Hello, Dolly! tribute performances, in which he plays Dolly, and with his long relationship with Channing, whom BroadwayWorld describes as central to his cabaret identity.
Skipper has said Channing blessed his tribute to her directly, and he is known for his impersonation of the Broadway legend. Speaking to the outlet ahead of a similar engagement, Skipper described the material as pulling from across his career: “They are a palette of songs of classic Broadway, timeless standards, a bit of cabaret sparkle, and pieces that reflect milestones in my life and career.”
Matthew Martin Steps In as Judy Garland
The San Francisco date will feature Matthew Martin performing his acclaimed Judy Garland tribute, according to the events.org listing. The guest spot gives the evening another layer beyond Skipper's own stories, folding a second well-known tribute performer into the audience-guided format.
The show's interactive concept isn't new to Skipper. The format previously had a sold-out premiere at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York, per the same events.org account, following an earlier evening there that BroadwayWorld reported was scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 30 and was, in the outlet's words, “guided primarily by questions submitted by the audience.”
Costumes Encouraged, With Prizes on the Line
Because the show falls on Halloween Eve, organizers are leaning into the timing: attendees are invited to dress as their favorite legend, with special prizes awarded for some of the evening's most imaginative looks, per the events.org listing. It's a fitting twist for a show already built around audience participation, turning the crowd itself into part of the night's spectacle alongside Skipper and Martin on stage.
