A one-alarm fire was reported Thursday at a building on the 800 block of University Street in San Francisco. In an update, the San Francisco Fire Department said crews found a fire at the rear of the building that had spread from a second-floor balcony to the roof exterior.
The department asked people to avoid University, Mansell and Colby streets while emergency vehicles were operating in the area. It also said the American Red Cross had been notified and was on its way. The Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region says it provides round-the-clock emergency assistance to people affected by fires and other disasters; that general service information does not establish whether anyone at this scene needed or received help.
What may be confirmed later
The initial update did not give the specific address, cause, damage, injury count or whether anyone was displaced. The Fire Department says its fire-incident dataset is updated daily and can include an incident’s address, responding units, actions taken and property loss. That describes the dataset generally; it does not confirm that details for this fire are already available.
For a life-threatening emergency, call or text 911. Report non-life-threatening hazards to 311.
