A family of four walking home from a local park shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday found themselves staring down the barrel of a handgun after the driver of a gray pickup truck allegedly yelled gang-related challenges and pointed the weapon at them — including two children ages 2 and 8. No one was physically hurt, but the confrontation set off a fast-moving police response that ended with a stolen, loaded firearm recovered from a 19-year-old driver and two arrests involving suspected criminal street gang activity.
According to the Press Democrat, the family reported the driver yelling gang-related challenges while pointing the handgun at them as they made their way home on October 11. The Santa Rosa Police Department responded to a report of an armed subject threatening a family, and investigators say the family sustained no physical injuries despite the frightening encounter.
Officers located the suspect vehicle, a gray pickup, parked on Clement Street, just west of Mendocino Avenue. At about 6:15 p.m., officers observed four people approaching the vehicle, according to the Press Democrat.
Four Detained, Two Identified as Involved
Four people were detained. Authorities ultimately said only two of them — a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, both from Windsor — were involved in the incident, the Press Democrat reported.
Investigators identified the 19-year-old driver as the person who brandished the firearm and yelled the gang challenges. Officers recovered a loaded firearm concealed on the driver that was later determined to be stolen. The driver and the 17-year-old passenger, also a Windsor resident, were believed to be involved in a criminal street gang.
Charges for the Driver and Teen Passenger
The 19-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm, brandishing a firearm and criminal street gang participation. The 17-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm, brandishing a firearm and criminal street gang participation.
One of the other two people detained was arrested on suspicion of violating probation, the Press Democrat reported.
Part of a Broader Gang Crackdown
The incident lands amid what Santa Rosa police describe as a period of increased gang-related criminal activity in the city. CBS News reported that five suspected gang members were arrested in Santa Rosa over a separate weekend, and that police logged 21 youth arrests for gun possession in 2023, compared with just four the year before. CBS also reported that five of Santa Rosa's nine homicides that year were gang-related.
That same weekend gang sweep, detailed by KTVU, followed a traffic stop at Hearn Avenue and Santa Rosa Avenue where officers found a loaded 9mm semi-automatic ghost gun with 10 unexpended cartridges, along with gang paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Two adults, Joseph Cervantes, 28, and David Dias, 18, were arrested at the scene, and three juveniles were booked into a juvenile detention center on related gang and firearm charges.
