The San Francisco Fire Department reported an active coastal rescue at Sutro Baths Saturday afternoon, involving one adult victim with non-life-threatening injuries. Crews began setting up a rescue system to bring the person to safety as the operation unfolded at the popular but treacherous ruins on the city's northwest edge.
According to a post from San Francisco Fire Department Media
, the department said it was “currently on a coastal rescue at Sutro Baths, one adult victim with non-life-threatening injuries.” The department added that it was “setting up a rescue system to retrieve this victim to safety,” though it's not clear from the available information whether the rescue has since been completed or whether the victim was transported for further care.
Sutro Baths sits on the northwest corner of San Francisco, just north of Ocean Beach, a stretch of coastline known for its scenic ruins.
A Familiar Scene Along San Francisco's Rugged Coast
This isn't the first time rescue crews have been dispatched to pull someone from danger near the historic ruins. In a separate incident, SFFD sent four swimmers to retrieve a surfer in distress and bring the person ashore, according to the station's report, though the rescue came at a cost: the swimmers themselves sustained cuts from the rocks during the operation.
The department's coastal rescue capabilities trace back decades. Since 1989, all firehouses along San Francisco's oceanfront have been designated “surf rescue” firehouses, per the same account from the fire department's own website.
Other Coastal Rescues Show a Pattern of Danger
Earlier this year, a tourist had to be rescued from a cliff above Ocean Beach after swimming at Kelly's Cove and becoming stranded, as reported by SFGATE. That rescue, completed at 4:50 p.m. on March 25, left the woman uninjured, and it involved a rescuer lowered to her using a rope system, with both the fire department and the California Highway Patrol responding to the scene.
A similar operation played out at Lands End in June, when rescue swimmers staged in the water helped an adult victim through heavy surf to reach an SFFD rescue boat, according to the Mercury News. That victim was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while one of the rescue swimmers suffered minor injuries during the effort.
Sutro Baths Has Seen Serious Incidents Before
The area's dangers have extended beyond swimmers and surfers. In 2022, four adults were rescued after the vehicle they were riding in plunged off a cliff near Sutro Baths, with two of them seriously injured, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Years earlier, three 17-year-old teenagers were pulled from a dangerous riptide near the ruins, with one requiring CPR after being brought to Hyde Street Pier, per ABC7 News. That outlet's reporting on the incident included conflicting details — one passage described one of the teens as being in critical condition, while another passage in the same report said all three victims were expected to survive.
As of Saturday afternoon, details on the current Sutro Baths rescue remained limited to the fire department's initial report. The victim's age, identity, and the exact circumstances that led to the call had not been released.
