Miami has officially opened Silver Bluff Dog Park, giving neighborhood pups a dedicated place to play that residents had been asking for nearly ten years. The city celebrated the grand opening at 2201 Southwest 26th Street, closing out a years-long campaign by local dog owners who had been pushing for a dedicated off-leash space in the neighborhood.
“The City of Miami proudly celebrated the grand opening of the new Silver Bluff Dog Park!” the city wrote in a post on X
, adding that “after nearly a decade of community requests, this exciting new space is finally a reality!” The announcement, posted Wednesday, marks the culmination of a process that stretched back years before the city broke ground this spring.
From Vacant Lot to Neighborhood Amenity
The project traces back to plans detailed by WLRN, which reported in April that the city intended to transform what had been a vacant lot into a proper dog park using Miami Forever Bond funding. That report pegged the project at an estimated $926,000, though a separate snippet from the same outlet described it as a $900,000 undertaking — a discrepancy the available records do not resolve. The city's own project page for the site, meanwhile, lists the outdoor area at 5,111 square feet, while the WLRN report described the lot as roughly 5,000 square feet.
Whatever the precise figures, the planned work included a six-foot perimeter fence, water fountains, and dog-waste stations, intended to give Silver Bluff residents a safe space to let their dogs run. The city planned to break ground at the site on April 28, according to the same WLRN report, ahead of Wednesday's ribbon-cutting roughly six months later.
Public Art Commission Approved
A public-art commission has been approved for Silver Bluff Dog Park. According to Citizen Portal, the city's Art in Public Places Board approved a direct acquisition to commission a six-foot CNC-cut aluminum sculpture from the artist team of Amir Shakir and Yvette Cabrera, known collectively as Color Dreamers. The board authorized up to $20,000 for the artwork and approved the project and funding allocation by a 6-0 vote, per the outlet's reporting.
A Long-Awaited Win for Dog Owners
For a neighborhood that had been requesting a dedicated dog space for close to ten years, the opening represents a tangible result from the city's broader Miami Forever Bond program, which has funded a range of neighborhood recreational improvements. Silver Bluff Dog Park is among the neighborhood recreational improvements funded through the Miami Forever Bond program.
