South Miami police are still searching for a 23-year-old woman accused of walking into a CVS with a fake ID and walking out with someone else's $2,000 cellphone. Investigators say Valentina Garces Torres used the phony identification to claim a package that was never meant for her.
According to WSVN, Garces Torres entered the CVS at 6460 S. Dixie Highway on Sept. 9, where she allegedly used the fake ID card to obtain a package addressed to someone else. Police say that package contained a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 valued at $2,000, and that the victim never authorized her to pick it up.
Detectives have released surveillance video and a still photo showing Garces Torres inside the store as they continue trying to track her down. Officials believe she may be responsible for other similar incidents, though no further details on those cases have been disclosed.
Fake IDs Showing Up in Other South Florida Package Thefts
The tactic echoes a case Hoodline covered out of Doral, where police said a man used fake IDs to steal a Rolex from a FedEx location. Whether or not the two cases are connected, the method of flashing a bogus ID to intercept someone else's delivery appears to be popping up more than once in South Florida.
How to Report a Tip
Anyone with information on Garces Torres's whereabouts is asked to contact the South Miami Police Department at 305-663-6301. Tipsters can also reach Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, where they may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
