An adult man suffered life-threatening injuries after a vehicle struck him Wednesday night on 3300 South in South Salt Lake, and the eastbound lanes between 1000 West and 1200 West were shut down for hours as investigators worked the scene. Police estimated the man's age at between 60 and 70. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after officers and fire crews converged on the area near 1075 W. 3300 South just before 10:30 p.m.
South Salt Lake police officers were dispatched at about 10:20 p.m. to a reported auto-pedestrian collision at that location, according to Gephardt Daily. South Salt Lake Fire Department crews arrived and immediately transported the man to an area hospital, the outlet reported. Investigators determined that a vehicle traveling east on 3300 South struck the man while he was in the roadway outside a crosswalk, though his exact location in the roadway had not been determined, police said.
Driver Stayed at the Scene
The driver remained at the scene following the crash. Police said there was no suspicion of driving under the influence at the time.
Salt Lake County investigators and South Salt Lake's Major Accident Team were handling the investigation, which remained active as of Wednesday night. Police said the closure of eastbound 3300 South would likely last several hours as crews worked the scene.
A Stretch of Road With a Troubling Recent History
Wednesday's crash adds to a string of pedestrian collisions in South Salt Lake. On May 5, 2026, a Tuesday-night crash near 700 West and Meadowbrook Expressway left a female pedestrian with life-threatening injuries, according to Gephardt Daily. Just last month, a driver was arrested after investigators said he struck and killed a pedestrian in South Salt Lake, left the scene and later wiped evidence from his vehicle, per KUTV. Another pedestrian was critically injured in a hit-and-run on 3300 South between West Temple and 300 West just before 9 p.m., as reported by KJZZ.
The pattern stretches back further. Near 3300 South and 300 East, a woman riding a scooter in a crosswalk was critically injured after being struck by a northbound driver, according to ABC4. And a man died near 3300 South and 900 West after police said he was crossing mid-block when an eastbound car struck him, with speed not appearing to be a factor, according to KSL.
Three Fatal Crashes Spurred Safety Upgrades
The repeated danger along this stretch of road prompted the Utah Department of Transportation and South Salt Lake to announce pedestrian safety upgrades following three fatal auto-pedestrian crashes in six weeks near the area's homeless resource center, ABC4 reported. Those crashes included a fatal collision near 3300 South and 900 West, a homeless man in a wheelchair who was struck by a pickup truck near 3400 South and 300 West and later died, and 67-year-old Duane Nebeker, who was hit and killed near 3300 South and 1000 West, according to the same ABC4 report.
The planned fixes include electronic warning signs urging drivers to watch for pedestrians, additional signage and lighting, relocating a nearby UTA transit stop, portable speed signs and outreach efforts at the homeless resource center, per ABC4's reporting. UDOT said those changes would be completed over the next several months. Statewide, traffic deaths reached a six-year low in Utah in 2025, though serious concerns remained for motorcyclists and teens, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
Wednesday's crash remained under investigation, and no additional details about the victim's identity, hospital or condition had been released. The overlap with a corridor already targeted for safety improvements underscores why 3300 South continues to draw scrutiny from traffic investigators and state transportation officials alike.
