Human remains discovered inside a shuttered water treatment plant in Sparta have been identified as missing 40-year-old Nikkie Simmons, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Simmons had been reported missing by Sparta police after she was last seen leaving behind her phone and other personal belongings. The identification closes one chapter of a case that has unsettled the small White County community for weeks, even as investigators say the full circumstances of her death remain under review.
How Investigators Found Her
According to The UC Now, information obtained from Simmons's husband led investigators to the lower level of the old water treatment facility, where the remains were ultimately recovered. TBI special agents responded to the 200 block of North Main Street at the request of 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway, the outlet reported. The remains were then sent to a Nashville forensic center for examination, per the same report.
Earlier accounts of the discovery described officers finding a deceased person on the lower level of the former Sparta water plant while conducting extra patrols at the building with the landowner's permission, according to WSMV. That station reported that police believed the remains belonged to Simmons based on what her husband had told them, though positive identification had not yet been confirmed at the time, with the body instead being taken to the Middle Tennessee Regional Forensic Center for autopsy and confirmation.
Last Seen Without Her Walker or Phone
Simmons was last seen on Oct. 8, and investigators learned from her husband that she had left on foot while her walker, cell phone and other personal items remained behind, FOX 17 reported in its coverage of the case. The station noted that the remains were sent to the Middle Tennessee Regional Forensics Center to officially confirm the identity, a step that multiple outlets described as part of the ongoing process of confirming who was found inside the old plant.
The recovery effort at the site was a joint operation. It involved the White County Medical Examiner's Office, the Sparta Police Department, the Sparta White County Rescue Squad and the Sparta Fire Department, according to 3B Media News. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney's office were notified once the remains were located, the outlet's report states.
TBI Says Investigation Continues
Mariah Dunlop, identified as the TBI's public information officer, is listed in connection with the case as the bureau works to determine what happened to Simmons. The TBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death, The UC Now reported, and authorities have not released further details about how she died or what led her to the old water treatment plant.
As the case moved from an active missing-persons search toward confirmation, local coverage reflected that shift. The Main Street Journal reported on Oct. 26 that authorities were awaiting final confirmation from the forensic center, a step that The UC Now's subsequent report indicates has now been completed. Community members had also been tracking the search for Simmons on social media, including through posts from the Main Street Journal's Sparta-area Facebook page.
No additional information about a cause of death, a suspect, or any potential charges has been released. Hoodline will continue to follow the case as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation provides updates.
