A stolen vehicle chase through Herndon late Wednesday night ended with one person in custody and police combing the area for a second suspect who fled on foot. The Herndon Police Department responded to Sterling Road near Crestview Drive after officers were told a stolen vehicle had been taken in the area, and the pursuit that followed drew a helicopter and a K-9 team into the night sky and onto the streets.
According to WJLA, the police response began around 11:39 p.m. Wednesday, and officers ultimately took one person into custody while a second suspect ran off on foot. Both suspects appeared to be juveniles, the outlet reported. Police described the outstanding suspect as standing roughly 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a skinny build, black hair, and wearing all black.
Helicopter and K-9 Join the Search
With one suspect still unaccounted for, officers called in a helicopter to scan the area from above while a K-9 unit was deployed on the ground to track the fleeing suspect, per the same WJLA report. Police asked the public to avoid the area while the search was underway, and investigators said there may have been additional suspects inside the vehicle, a detail that was still being sorted out as of the report.
By around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, police reported that the scene was nearly clear, with the helicopter and K-9 unit both clearing out, according to the outlet's update. It remains unclear from that report whether the second suspect was ultimately located.
A Separate Account of Parked-Car Crashes
A separate report from DC News Now described a driver taken into custody after allegedly using a stolen vehicle to crash into multiple parked cars in Herndon early Monday morning, with the 600 block of Center Street closed while officers investigated. That outlet reported the suspected driver was later located and arrested, and that all lanes had reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m. Monday.
A third account, from FOX 5 DC, described two teenagers jumping out of a moving stolen vehicle and fleeing police in Fairfax County, with officers using a helicopter and K-9 units to track them down. That report said Fairfax 1 and a K-9 helped get two of the teenage suspects into custody, while a third teen was apprehended nearby by officers, and that the Reston Neighborhood Patrol Unit located the stolen vehicle near Centreville Road and Parcher Avenue in McNair.
A Prior Pursuit in Herndon
A 2017 high-speed chase began when an officer tried to stop a gray two-door Mercedes-Benz near Crestview Drive and Herndon Parkway, only for the driver to vanish, Herndon, VA Patch reported.
No charges, ages, or identities have been confirmed in connection with Wednesday night's chase, and the outcome of the search for the second suspect has not been verified. Herndon police have not released additional details beyond what was reported overnight.
