A southwest Oklahoma City family is rebuilding after a driver crashed an SUV into their home in the middle of the night, slamming directly into the bedroom where Joshua Kingsland, his wife and their daughter were asleep. Everyone in the room survived, but Kingsland and his wife were hurt, and the driver tried to run before Kingsland chased her down and held her until police arrived.

“An SUV just plowed through my house and hit me in my bed,” Kingsland said, describing the moment of impact, according to KFOR. He said the force of the crash smashed the bed upward and left the room buried in rubble. Despite the chaos, everyone sleeping in that bedroom made it out alive.

Injuries Included Knocked-Out Teeth and Bruised Lungs

Kingsland told KFOR he lost a couple of teeth and had a swollen jaw, severely bruised lungs and some bleeding in his chest. The injuries were classified as minor.

Security-camera footage from Kingsland’s home, reported by KFOR, captured the driver trying to flee on foot. Kingsland said he chased and held her until police arrived.

A Neighbor's Tip Helped Point the Way

Neighbor Mark Lopez told KFOR that the vehicle swerved down the street before hitting the house. Lopez then pointed Kingsland toward the driver as she tried to get away.

Repairs to the home are underway. Kingsland told KFOR that his family’s survival was the best outcome he could have hoped for.

What the available traffic data show

The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office says it publishes an annual Crash Facts book on traffic crashes. Its cited historic-data page does not provide figures on vehicles striking homes or establish the residential speed limit and traffic-safety measures for this location, so those questions remain unanswered by the materials available here.

KFOR reported that it was still waiting for the Oklahoma City Police Department’s full accident report, leaving details of the crash unresolved.
