A person was rescued from Lake Michigan near Hollywood Beach on Chicago's North Side Friday morning and remains in critical condition, according to fire officials. Crews responded to a report of someone in the water around 9:45 a.m. in the 5800 block of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive, not far from the Edgewater neighborhood.
Chicago Fire Department divers located the victim and pulled them from the water, according to fox32chicago.com, which reported the person was rushed to an area hospital in serious to critical condition. Chicago fire officials separately confirmed to ABC7 Chicago that the person pulled from the water near Hollywood Beach was in critical condition following the large emergency response. ABC7's Chopper 7 was over the scene around 10:15 a.m. as crews worked the area near Lake Michigan and Edgewater.
Identity and Cause Still Unknown
Authorities have not released the victim's identity, age, or any details about what led to the person ending up in the lake, and the incident remains under investigation. Fire officials have not provided additional information about the extent of the person's injuries beyond the serious to critical designation.
The rescue unfolded near Kathy Osterman Beach, the official name for the stretch of shoreline most Chicagoans know as Hollywood Beach. According to the Chicago Park District, the beach sits near Edgewater at the northernmost tip of Lincoln Park and is sometimes also called Ardmore Beach, situated between Hollywood and Ardmore avenues.
Lakefront Trail Work Underway Nearby
The park district also flagged ongoing maintenance along the adjacent Lakefront Trail in a notice posted last month, warning that repairs would continue throughout the trail over several months. No connection between that work and Friday's rescue has been established, and the circumstances surrounding how the person entered the water remain unclear.
No further updates on the victim's condition had been released as of Friday. This is a developing story, and further details will be added as they become available.
