A 16-year-old boy was arrested in River North on Monday and charged with aggravated battery and robbery in connection with an attack on a 22-year-old woman who was riding a CTA Brown Line train near the Washington/Wabash stop. The woman was beaten and robbed by a group of two to three people near that downtown station, according to police.
Court information for the teenager was not immediately available, according to CBS News Chicago. The suspects fled the scene after the attack, which police say took place in the Loop.
Pattern of Robberies Reported on the Brown Line
The arrest follows warnings from Chicago police about a string of robberies on the same line this fall. Police said there were at least two robberies downtown on the CTA Brown Line during the month, according to a separate report from ABC7 Chicago. In those incidents, police said two to three suspects approached victims on the train and took their property by force.
The first of those incidents happened just before 9:20 p.m. on Sept. 4 in the 100-block of North Wabash Avenue in the Loop, the station reported. A second occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 in the 200-block of South Wells Street, also in the Loop. In both cases, police said the suspects fled on foot or by train, and in one of the incidents the suspects were armed with a gun. The two earlier robberies preceded the teenager's Monday arrest.
Police also circulated a description of a male suspect wearing a black mask, black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black shoes and a black backpack in connection with the earlier robberies, the station's report noted.
A Mixed Picture on Transit Safety
The incident lands amid conflicting signals about crime trends across the CTA system. Chicago Police Department data showed FBI-classified violent crime on CTA buses, trains and properties fell by about 5% from 2024 to 2025 through Dec. 21, 2025, and dropped roughly 10% since 2022, according to the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper's analysis also found 4,116 crimes reported on CTA buses, trains, platforms, bus stops or garages through Dec. 10, 2025, with unarmed battery the most common type, making up about one in five reports.
Chicago police recorded eight homicides on the CTA within city limits in 2025 as of Dec. 23, the Tribune reported, including a Dec. 23 shooting on a Pink Line train at Washington and Wells streets that followed a knife fight and left one man dead. CTA buses and trains carried more than one million trips on an average weekday, per the same analysis, underscoring how much ridership the system still handles even as isolated violent incidents draw attention.
How Past CTA Robbery Cases Have Been Resolved
Court outcomes in past CTA robbery and battery cases have varied widely. Terry Davis pleaded guilty to three separate robberies at the Jackson Red Line platform and received concurrent 10-year sentences on each count, while Ein Julian received a three-year sentence for robbing a 25-year-old man on a Red Line train near Jackson in 2020, according to CWB Chicago.
Other defendants received lighter sentences in similar cases tracked by the outlet. Jajuan Vaughan pleaded guilty to five theft counts tied to CTA train robberies and received concurrent two-year sentences, while Jacarri Kelly pleaded guilty in a Jackson Red Line platform robbery case and received 24 months of probation with 100 hours of community service. Lamonte Taylor-Gwin, convicted of aggravated battery of a transit employee in a similar platform attack and robbery, received a five-year sentence.
