A presale is underway for The Bodyguard: The Musical, which touches down at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre for a four-day run from February 11 through 14, 2027. Fans who can't wait for Wednesday's general on-sale can look for seats during the presale, while the general public sale opens at 10am Pacific on Wednesday, October 21.
The musical is based on the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, and the production leans on that film's blockbuster legacy while blending high-stakes suspense with music. The show features some of the soundtrack's most recognizable numbers, including “Queen of the Night,” “So Emotional,” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
That 1992 film, written by Lawrence Kasdan, grossed $411 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, making it 1992's second-highest-grossing movie, according to Wikipedia. Kasdan reportedly wrote the original script in the mid-1970s as a vehicle for Diana Ross and Steve McQueen, though it took nearly two decades to reach the screen. The movie's soundtrack remains the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, with more than 45 million copies sold worldwide, according to the Recording Academy, which also notes the album won the 1994 Grammy for Album of the Year.
A Showstopper Built Around One Unforgettable Ballad
Central to that soundtrack's legacy is Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's “I Will Always Love You,” which spent 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992 and 1993 and earned Record of the Year at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy reports. Costner reportedly suggested Houston record Parton's ballad after another planned song ended up in a competing 1991 film.
The stage adaptation, written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris, opened at London's Adelphi Theatre in fall 2012. Dinelaris later won the 2015 Best Original Screenplay Academy Award for co-writing Birdman. The current North American touring production launched in October 2026 under director Samantha Saltzman, starring Brooke Bailey as Rachel Marron and Jonathan Blansfield as Frank Farmer across a 50-plus city itinerary, according to Playbill. The tour is a new, reimagined production from Crossroads Live North America, set to play more than 50 cities.
Golden Gate Theatre's Storied Stage Hosts a New Chapter
The Golden Gate Theatre is a historic venue. The theater is at 1 Taylor Street, near Market Street.
ATG lists shows at the venue, and presales can precede public sales.
The booking fits a broader pattern at the Market Street venue this year. Beyond touring musicals, the Golden Gate Theatre has expanded into unscripted author talks, live podcast tapings, and political debates, Hoodline reported, pointing to recent bookings that have included actor Michael Douglas and digital streamers Hasan Piker and QTCinderella. The theater has also hosted a political face-off between two national figures this year, underscoring how the venue has broadened well past its traditional touring-musical bookings.
