Three New Orleans police officers were injured Sunday evening after rushing into a burning apartment building in the 9000 block of Chef Menteur Highway to pull a toddler to safety. Two officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, while a third was taken to a local hospital for treatment. All three are now listed in stable condition.
A fire broke out at the apartment complex. The New Orleans Fire Department brought the blaze under control around 8:30 p.m., WWL-TV reported. Three New Orleans Police Department officers entered the building to help rescue a toddler, according to WDSU.
While firefighters worked to contain the flames, officers assigned to NOPD's Seventh District also managed temporary street closures to facilitate emergency operations in the area, per the same WDSU account. The block sits within the Seventh District's roughly 133-square-mile footprint in New Orleans East, the geographically largest police district in the city, according to a City of New Orleans community outreach document.
The Risk of Entering Without Breathing Gear
The Risk of Smoke Inhalation The Risk of Smoke Inhalation Smoke inhalation can pose serious acute respiratory hazards, including airway inflammation, bronchospasm, and poisoning from carbon monoxide or hydrogen cyanide. Two of the three NOPD officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, while the third required hospital care.
State Protections for Injured Officers
Louisiana lawmakers expanded financial protections for officers hurt on the job just months before Sunday's fire. House Bill 145, which took effect July 1, established a state program allowing law enforcement officers injured in the line of duty to receive up to $25,000 per injury for extraordinary medical and dental expenses not already covered by workers' compensation or health insurance, according to the Louisiana State Legislature. Separately, Louisiana Workers' Compensation law already guarantees emergency first responders who sustain physical injuries or post-traumatic stress on the job full coverage for necessary medical care along with partial wage replacement.
Sunday's fire was not the first major structural blaze along the Chef Menteur corridor this year. In April, an electrical malfunction sparked a third-floor fire at a Super 8 Motel on the same highway, displacing 30 occupants and requiring additional New Orleans Fire Department crews to contain the flames, WWL-TV reported at the time; no injuries were reported in that incident.
A Broader Safety Picture in New Orleans East
The rescue comes against a backdrop of significant citywide crime reduction. Violent crime across New Orleans fell by 70% between 2022 and mid-2026, with major drops recorded in police districts covering New Orleans East and the 9th Ward, according to a report from the Metropolitan Crime Commission. Even so, Sunday's fire underscores the intensive first-responder demands that remain along major arterial corridors like Chef Menteur Highway, where NOPD patrol officers often arrive at emergencies ahead of or alongside fire crews.
Sunday's officers are expected to recover; all three remain in stable condition.
