Two men were shot Tuesday night in Southeast D.C., and as of Wednesday police had released no information about how either of them is doing. Officers responded to the 3100 block of Buena Vista Terrace SE at about 10:43 p.m. and found both men conscious and breathing despite their gunshot wounds, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
D.C. Fire and EMS transported both victims to local hospitals for treatment, as reported by WJLA. Authorities have not disclosed their current conditions, and the station notes the investigation remains ongoing. No suspect description or other details about the circumstances of the shooting have been made public.
Police Still Seeking Tips From the Neighborhood
MPD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 202-727-9099 or send a text to 50411. The department has not said whether investigators have identified a motive or a weapon tied to the case, and the same report indicates no arrests had been announced as of Wednesday morning.
This isn't the first time violence has struck that stretch of Buena Vista Terrace SE. In May 2024, MPD investigated a fatal shooting on the same block after officers located a man on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds who died at the scene, according to D.C. Witness. Years earlier, federal prosecutors said 26-year-old Andre McConnell was fatally shot while with friends in the same block back in April 2015, per the U.S. Department of Justice.
A Citywide Climb in Gun Assaults
Tuesday's shooting comes as D.C. has seen reported gun assaults tick upward. Citywide gun assaults rose 13% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to the Council on Criminal Justice. Reported aggravated assaults climbed even more sharply, up 45% over the same comparison period, per the nonprofit research group's midyear report, which examined 13 offenses recorded in D.C. and 35 other American cities from 2018 through June 2026.
Despite the year-over-year increase, the city's gun assault rate still sits well below pre-pandemic and recent-year benchmarks. The rate was 14% lower in the first half of 2026 than during the same period in 2019, and at 40.4 incidents per 100,000 residents, it was 42% lower than the same period in 2023, the council's data shows. By comparison, the average change in gun assault rates among the nine other study cities reporting that offense was a 6% decline over the same one-year span.
For now, the focus in Southeast remains on Tuesday night's shooting itself, with investigators working to piece together what happened on Buena Vista Terrace SE and the condition of the two men still unconfirmed. Anyone with information is urged to come forward through MPD's tip line.
