A man crawling through the ceiling of a Vancouver Mall department store for more than an hour ended up tumbling onto a mattress that police had placed beneath him, then tried to bolt before officers caught up and detained him. The scene unfolded on September 30, after mall employees spotted the man moving above the ceiling tiles and called police.
Vancouver Mall employees reported that a man was crawling around the ceiling and breaking tiles, according to KOIN.com. Police officers who responded commanded the man to come down, but he stayed put as officials worked to talk him out for roughly an hour, per the outlet's report.
Wiring and Lights Damaged as Man Moved Through Ceiling
As the standoff dragged on, the man moved through the ceiling space, damaging wiring, lights, and additional ceiling tiles, according to officers cited in the report. Out of caution, officers and firefighters evacuated the mall's second floor while the situation played out overhead.
Eventually, police placed a ladder up to the ceiling with a mattress positioned underneath the man, the station's report notes. He stepped onto the ladder but then tried climbing back into the ceiling, prompting officers to pull the ladder away.
Fall, Flight, and Felony Charges
The man ultimately landed on the mattress below and immediately tried running away, but officers detained him at the scene, per the same account. He was found to be subject to an existing felony warrant and was charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree malicious mischief.
Washington law defines first-degree burglary under RCW 9A.52.020, while first-degree malicious mischief falls under RCW 9A.48.070, which covers knowing and malicious property destruction. The evidence reviewed does not identify the man's name, age, or any court disposition, and it remains unclear whether the reported charges have been formally filed or what the felony warrant involved.
Similar scenes have played out elsewhere when people have ended up crawling through ceilings while evading arrest, though the circumstances differed. In Florida, Indian River County SWAT officers took a suspect into custody in November 2025 after he fell through a ceiling while barricaded in an attic, having fled into a home after being caught with a stolen pickup truck, according to Police1. And in Memphis, murder suspect Deario Wilkerson fell through a ceiling in August 2024 while police searched his home, as reported by the BBC.
