An exterior tire fire burned at a west Phoenix auto shop before sunrise Thursday, sending thick black smoke rolling into the morning sky and prompting firefighters to call in extra crews. The blaze broke out near 75th Avenue and Indian School Road around 5 a.m., with firefighters working to keep it from extending into nearby buildings.
According to Arizona's Family, Phoenix firefighters were called out to the fire at Corona Wheel & Tires Auto Service, located near that same intersection. Video captured at the scene showed large plumes of black smoke pouring from the back of the shop as crews worked to get a handle on the flames.
Call Upgraded as Flames Spread Fast
The call was upgraded to a first-alarm response, with additional resources requested because of the fire’s size and exposure risk. Firefighters used ladder trucks to extinguish the exterior tire fire and prevent it from extending into nearby buildings.
The cause of the fire remained unclear as crews worked the scene, per the same account. No injuries were reported. Crews knocked down the fire within an hour and had obtained fire control while working on hot spots.
Conflicting Reports on the Shop's Name
There is some uncertainty about exactly which business was burning. While the published article names Corona Wheel & Tires Auto Service as the site of the fire, a separate search snippet tied to the same report instead identifies Sammy's Auto Service as the location near 75th Avenue and Indian School Road. It is not clear from available information whether the two names refer to the same business or whether one is simply incorrect.
A business listing for Sammy's Auto Service places it at 4030 N 75th Ave. in Phoenix, according to Yelp, within the same general area referenced in the fire report. That listing describes the shop as handling general mechanic repairs, including oil changes, timing, transmission, engine, and suspension work.
Arizona's Family said it reached out to the Phoenix Fire Department for more information on the fire. As of publication, no additional details on the cause, the extent of the damage, or the shop's exact identity had been confirmed.
