A woodworking shop in West Valley City went up in flames before dawn on Wednesday, and by the time firefighters were done with it, the building itself was gone. Crews knocked down the initial fire only to watch it flare back up hours later, forcing them to tear the structure down to make sure it was truly out.
West Valley City firefighters initially responded to the business shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to KUTV, which placed the shop at 3695 W. 2150 South. A separate report from KMYU described the location as near 3600 West and 2100 South, just after 2 a.m. the same morning. When crews arrived on scene, flames were already coming from the roof of the building.
Firefighters knocked down those initial flames and then spent several hours working to prevent the fire from reigniting, the station's report notes. For a time, it appeared the effort had worked and the blaze was under control.
The Fire Comes Back
That calm didn't last. The fire likely rekindled Wednesday afternoon, prompting crews to return to the scene and extinguish the flames a second time, per the same account. ABC4 reported a more specific window for the flare-up, saying it reportedly rekindled shortly before 4 p.m., sending crews back out to the shop.
Putting the fire out a second time still wasn't enough to close the book on it. ABC4 reported that crews ultimately had to tear down the building in order to ensure the fire was fully out and that there were no remaining hot spots left smoldering inside the wreckage.
Mutual Aid From Neighboring Cities
West Valley City firefighters didn't handle the two-stage fire alone. Crews from South Salt Lake, West Jordan and Salt Lake City assisted with the response, the article notes, reflecting how quickly the incident grew from an overnight call into a daylong operation.
Despite the extensive flames, the rekindling and the eventual demolition of the building, no injuries were reported throughout the incident. The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of the latest reporting, and no additional details on what sparked the blaze had been released.
