A person riding a late-night 5-Fulton Owl Muni bus through San Francisco's Western Addition was stabbed multiple times early Monday, suffering injuries that police say were not life-threatening before the attacker slipped away into the dark. The attack happened around 1:10 a.m. near the intersection of McAllister and Laguna streets, leaving the victim wounded and the suspect still unidentified.
Officers Arrive Within Minutes, Suspect Already Gone
San Francisco police officers responded to the stabbing report at Laguna and McAllister streets and arrived by 1:13 a.m., according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Officers found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds and provided aid while San Francisco firefighters and a private ambulance crew responded to the scene, as reported by SFist. The victim was then transported to a hospital, and officials described the injuries as non-life-threatening.
The attacker had already fled the bus before officers arrived, reportedly heading west on Laguna Street. Per the Chronicle's report, officers searched the area but did not find the suspect, and The San Francisco Standard similarly reported that no description of the attacker had been released.
Transit Agency Responds to Latest Violent Incident
SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato said the agency continues to take the issue seriously. “Violence on our transit system is deeply concerning, and we remain committed to the safety and well-being of everyone who rides and works on Muni,” Kato said, per the same Chronicle account.
This is not the first bus stabbing to rattle San Francisco riders in recent months. On Sept. 23, a passenger was stabbed in the neck and throat aboard a 14-Mission bus near 10th and Mission streets, a case in which prosecutors later charged 44-year-old San Francisco resident Glenn Hopkins with attempted murder and other offenses, the Chronicle's report notes. Back in March, two separate arguments between passengers on different Muni buses resulted in two more stabbings in a single day, according to the same SFist account — one woman stabbed on a 49 bus near 13th and Mission streets, and a man stabbed near 6th and Mission streets after an argument with another passenger who fled.
Assault Numbers Down, But Incidents Still Draw Scrutiny
Despite the string of recent attacks, SFMTA data points to a longer-term decline in violence across the transit system. The agency reported that police-investigated aggravated assaults on Muni fell from 1,089 incidents in 2019 to 307 through July 2026, a decrease of nearly 72%, the Chronicle reported. Separately, SFMTA tracks SFPD-reported Muni-related crimes per 100,000 miles of service as a measure of overall customer safety, according to SFMTA's own reporting.
That broader downward trend tracks with citywide numbers as well. San Francisco's aggravated assault rate in the first half of 2025 was 16% lower than the same period in 2024 and 10% lower than the first half of 2019, according to the Council on Criminal Justice. Still, the string of knife attacks aboard buses this year, along with the separate July 2025 fatal stabbing of cyclist Colden Kimber at a Muni K-Ingleside light-rail stop after he intervened in a harassment incident, as reported by the San Francisco Standard, has kept rider anxiety high even as overall numbers trend down.
