An adult woman is fighting for her life after being shot overnight on Indianapolis' east side, with officers finding her just before 1:30 a.m. Friday on the 2100 block of Sussex Lane, near East 21st Street and Post Road. A juvenile person of interest is now in custody, and police say the public is not in danger.
Responding officers were sent to the scene on a report of a person shot, according to WTHR, and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition, as reported by FOX59.
Police confirmed that a juvenile is now detained in connection with the shooting, though no further details on the circumstances or what led up to the gunfire have been released. Investigators emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public following the detention, the station's report notes.
Anonymous Tips Sought as Investigation Continues
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana, which accepts anonymous tips. Those tips can help investigators piece together what happened on Sussex Lane before officers arrived in the early morning hours, per the same account from FOX59.
The shooting adds to a string of recent east-side incidents in Indianapolis. Earlier in October, a woman was critically injured in what WTHR described as an apparent road-rage shooting near 38th Street and North Franklin Road. In August, a juvenile girl was critically wounded in a shooting in the 1300 block of North Dearborn Street, and a separate incident left two juveniles critically injured near East 10th Street and North Emerson Avenue, according to earlier WTHR coverage.
Shootings Trending Down Citywide Despite Latest Incident
Even as this latest shooting unfolds, broader city data shows a notable drop in gun violence across Indianapolis this year. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has reported 185 non-fatal shootings involving 214 victims so far in 2026, according to WIBC. That marks a 38% decline from the same point in 2025, when IMPD had reported 289 incidents and 345 total victims.
The numbers reflect a five-year downward trend in non-fatal shootings dating back to 2022, WIBC reports. IMPD also reported a 40% clearance rate for non-fatal shootings this year, suggesting investigators are closing a larger share of cases even as the overall volume of shootings falls.
