A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle at South George Mason Drive and Leesburg Pike in Bailey's Crossroads, according to Fairfax County police. The driver stayed at the scene and was not hurt, while officers shut down a stretch of roadway as crash reconstruction detectives worked to piece together what happened.
Officers responded to the crash at the intersection in Fairfax County on Friday, according to WJLA. The injured woman was taken to a hospital after being hit, the station reported, while the driver remained uninjured and stayed put as investigators arrived.
Road Closed as Detectives Investigate
Crash reconstruction detectives took over the investigation at the scene, and South George Mason Drive was closed at Leesburg Pike while they worked, per the same report. Drivers in the area were asked to find an alternate route around the closure as the investigation continued.
No additional details on the circumstances of the collision, the driver's identity, or the woman's current condition have been released.
A Stretch of Road With a History of Pedestrian Crashes
Bailey's Crossroads has seen other serious pedestrian crashes in recent months and years, though there is nothing tying those incidents to Friday's crash. In August, a Metro bus struck and killed a pedestrian at Columbia Pike and Carlin Springs Road, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Police identified that victim as 59-year-old Adam Ali of Idylwood, who was crossing Carlin Springs Road in a crosswalk with the pedestrian signal when he was struck; he was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition and later died.
Fairfax County has also recorded other pedestrian crashes nearby in years past. A 2022 crash at Leesburg Pike and Carlin Springs Road proved fatal, and police later charged 26-year-old Yaraliz Rivera Rosado with felony hit and run in that case, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. That same year, the county logged 17 pedestrian-related fatal crashes through late October, compared with 11 over the same span in 2021, the department reported.
Separately, Annandale Today reported that a two-vehicle crash at Leesburg Pike and Crossroads Center Way in Bailey's Crossroads injured three pedestrians — an adult man, an adult woman, and a teenage girl — all of whom were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers in that crash were not hurt, the outlet noted.
Fairfax County police have not said whether Friday's crash is connected to any broader pattern along the corridor. No further updates on the investigation into the South George Mason Drive crash have been released.
