A woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning at the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and Wilson Avenue in New Orleans East, according to police. Officers called to the scene found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead there. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have released no further details about what led to the shooting.
According to WDSU, homicide unit detectives with the New Orleans Police Department are now leading the investigation into the woman's death. The station reported that police provided no further information about the circumstances of the shooting or a possible motive. It is the latest violent incident to strike this stretch of Chef Menteur Highway, a corridor that has seen repeated gunfire over the years.
A Corner With a Violent Past
This is not the first time gunfire has erupted at this exact intersection. On March 4, 2023, three people — a man, a woman, and an infant who suffered a graze wound — were shot and wounded near the same corner of Chef Menteur Highway and Wilson Avenue, per WWL-TV. EMS transported all three victims to the hospital that night.
The area's history stretches back further still. In December 2019, a gunman opened fire on two occupants of a pickup truck near Wilson Avenue and Dwyer Road, causing the vehicle to crash onto the neutral ground at Chef Menteur Highway and Wilson Avenue, WWL-TV reported at the time. Police noted that shell casings littered nearby streets afterward.
Inside the NOPD's Largest, Most Burdened District
The shooting falls within the NOPD's Seventh District, whose station sits at 10101 Dwyer Road and which covers roughly 133 square miles — the largest geographic footprint of any police district in the city, stretching from the Industrial Canal to Lake Pontchartrain, according to city records. The district spans a large area, from the Industrial Canal to Lake Pontchartrain.
New Orleans East, where the shooting occurred, comprises roughly 65% of the city's total land area while holding only about 20% of its population, per The Data Center's demographic analysis. Those figures show that New Orleans East accounts for a much larger share of the city's land than its population.
Recent Public Safety Developments
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams announced in January that New Orleans achieved its lowest annual homicide rate in 50 years during 2025, crediting sustained coordination between local, state, and federal law enforcement.
Recurring violence along corridors like Chef Menteur Highway remains a local concern.
The Tuesday morning shooting adds to a string of recent violence in the area that Hoodline has tracked in a nearby Dwyer Road shooting late last month. No further information has been released about the woman killed Tuesday, and the investigation remains active.
