A 22-year-old Chicago man is facing a first-degree murder charge more than a year after a shooting inside a Woodlawn business left a 31-year-old man dead and injured others, including a 6-year-old boy. Jaylen McDaniel was arrested and charged with murder along with six firearm-related felony counts, according to Chicago police.
According to WGN-TV, police say McDaniel and another suspect entered a business near the 800 block of East 63rd Street and opened fire just before 4 p.m. That outlet reported the shooting killed a 31-year-old man and injured two other people, a 25-year-old man and a 40-year-old man. McDaniel was arrested in the Little Village neighborhood and is expected to appear in court for a detention hearing Thursday, per the same report.
Other outlets describe a more extensive toll from the gunfire. As reported by CBS News Chicago, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, while a male victim of unknown age suffered a graze wound and took himself to the same hospital. That outlet also reported that a 6-year-old boy was injured by broken glass during the shooting and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
Charges Filed More Than a Year Later
Chicago police said McDaniel has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, three felony counts of aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm, and three felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to FOX 32 Chicago. That station reported the shooting occurred when two armed suspects entered a business and opened fire just before 4 p.m., and identified the date of the shooting as June 28, 2025 — a detail that conflicts with the June 25, 2025 date cited in the original WGN-TV report. McDaniel was arrested on a Tuesday and was scheduled for a detention hearing that Thursday, per the FOX 32 account, though the exact date of his arrest was not specified.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported at the time that the shooting happened at a gas station in Woodlawn, and identified the man who died as Keenan Terrell Campbell, 31, saying he was shot multiple times and later pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center.
Conflicting Accounts of the Victim Count
Accounts of how many people were hurt in the shooting vary. WGN-TV's original reporting described two injured victims, a 25-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, while CBS News Chicago and other outlets described three people injured in addition to the man who died, including the 6-year-old boy hit by broken glass. Authorities have not announced charges against anyone else in connection with the shooting, according to WGN-TV.
The shooting unfolded inside a business in the area when McDaniel and a second suspect allegedly opened fire, police said. McDaniel was identified as one of the alleged offenders, according to authorities cited by WGN-TV, and was later taken into custody in Little Village.
