A 25-year-old LaPlace man died after being shot at his residence and then crashing his car into a neighborhood thrift store as he apparently tried to drive himself to safety. Deputies say Kyron Davis was found lying near the wrecked vehicle outside the St. Joan of Arc Thrift Shop on Fir Street late Wednesday night, suffering from gunshot wounds that would prove fatal.
According to WWL-TV, deputies believe Davis was shot at his home shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday and then attempted to drive himself to get medical help, ultimately crashing into the thrift store. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office received a report of gunfire on Fir Street around that time, followed almost immediately by a call about a vehicle that had crashed into the thrift store in the 300 block of the same street, according to NOLA.com. Davis was rushed to Ochsner Medical Center in LaPlace, where he later died of his injuries.
A Charity Storefront Becomes a Crime Scene
The thrift shop was closed at the time of the crash, and the report notes no one else was hurt in the incident, though the building itself sustained damage. The store has operated on Fir Street since 1971, when it was founded by St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church to sell low-cost clothing and household goods benefiting local families, per the church's own account.
The thrift shop's connection to local law enforcement runs deeper than this single night. In August 2023, volunteers and management from the store presented a donation to the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office Body Armor Fund to help purchase protective vests for deputies, according to the same outlet's report. That fundraising relationship between the charity shop and the sheriff's office stretches back decades, per the publication.
Victim's Record Raises Questions, No Arrests Yet
Davis was listed with a felony contempt warrant dated Sept. 30, 2026. It remains unclear whether the warrant is connected to the shooting that killed him.
As of late Thursday afternoon, authorities had not announced any arrests in the case, NOLA.com reports. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call its tips line at 985-359-TIPS (8477) or Sgt. Myaka Lane directly at 985-212-7536, or to submit tips through the department's website.
Part of a Troubling Pattern in LaPlace
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Louisiana law defines second-degree murder to include killings committed with specific intent to kill or inflict great bodily harm, killings during certain enumerated felonies, and deaths caused by specified controlled-substance distributions. The charge carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment at hard labor without parole, probation, or suspension of sentence under state statute, according to FindLaw. The investigation falls under St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre.
This is not an isolated incident for LaPlace this year. Hoodline previously reported on a fatal targeted shooting inside a vehicle near Williamsburg and Bedford drives in March.
