A 14-year-old student is facing multiple weapons charges after a school resource officer found a loaded handgun in the student's backpack at Yorkville High School Academy, triggering a lockdown and a scramble of police response at the suburban Illinois campus. No injuries were reported, and police say the incident appears to be isolated.
According to Shaw Local, students alerted staff shortly after 1 p.m. on the day of the incident, and school personnel and law enforcement were able to respond quickly as a result. A school security and resource officer then determined the backpack contained a loaded handgun, as ABC7 Chicago reports.
The lockdown occurred on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026.
Charges Include Stolen Firearm Count
The teen now faces several charges, including unlawful possession of a weapon, six counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm and obstructing a peace officer, the same Shaw Local report states. The student was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center and taken into custody without incident, according to the outlet's reporting.
Yorkville police said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges may be filed, the Shaw Local report notes. Investigators have said they currently have no further information to share about the incident, per ABC7 Chicago.
Police Say No Evidence Points to Wider Threat
Police described the case as isolated, finding no evidence that other students were involved or specifically threatened, per the same Shaw Local account. Yorkville officials emphasized that it was students who first flagged the concern, crediting their decision to report what they observed with allowing staff and officers to act swiftly.
District administrators said they were working in full, close collaboration with the Yorkville Police Department on the investigation, according to WSPY News. Police also said educational institutions are meant to be welcoming and safe environments for students and staff, a sentiment ABC7 Chicago included in its reporting on the arrest.
Counseling Teams Head to Campus
Crisis Support Teams made up of trained counselors and mental health professionals were expected to offer services at both the Freshman Academy and the main Yorkville High School campus, the district said, according to the Shaw Local follow-up. The gaps in the public record remain notable: no charging document, juvenile court record or case disposition has been made available, and details about the firearm itself, including how it ended up reported stolen, have not been verified beyond the allegation that it was loaded.
The Yorkville case follows a similar scare on Long Island, where a 16-year-old student at Smithtown High School West was arrested after a gun, a magazine and a knife were found in his backpack, according to Newsday. In that case, school staffers searched the student's backpack at about 1:55 p.m. after learning he may have posted a photo of a handgun on social media, and he was ultimately charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon tied to a loaded firearm on school grounds, Newsday reported.
