A 41-year-old man died after being shot during an argument early Sunday in Chicago Lawn on the city's Southwest Side, according to police. The man got into a dispute with another man around 2 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Francisco Avenue before being shot, and he then drove himself to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the man self-transported to Holy Cross Hospital following the shooting, according to CBS Chicago. Wentworth Area detectives were assigned to investigate the shooting, and as of Sunday morning, police had not said whether a second man believed to be involved was in custody. WGN-TV similarly reported that the victim took himself to an area hospital, where he died, and that police had not said if anybody was in custody.

Conflicting Accounts of How Many Were Involved

Accounts of the shooting differ on a key detail: how many people confronted the victim. WGN-TV reported that an unidentified offender pulled out a gun, shot the victim and then fled the scene. But a separate report from CBS News said Chicago police were early Monday looking for three people who got into a fight with the man before shooting and killing him. The discrepancy has not been resolved, and police have not released further details clarifying the number of people sought in connection with the shooting.

A Neighborhood That Has Seen Repeated Gun Violence

The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents to hit Chicago Lawn in recent months. On September 12, three people were shot in the neighborhood, including a 37-year-old woman who suffered wounds to her head, right hand and left wrist and was listed in critical condition, according to the same NBC Chicago report, which said two men in a light-colored sedan opened fire on a group standing in the 7100 block of South Campbell Avenue around 9 p.m.

Days earlier, a 28-year-old man was shot after an argument on September 4 in the 7300 block of South Kedzie Avenue; he later died at Holy Cross Hospital, the same hospital where Sunday's victim was pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. And in late August, a Chicago Lawn shooting left one man dead after he was shot in the head, while another was critically injured.

Citywide Numbers Show a Mixed Picture

The Chicago Lawn violence comes as citywide shooting and homicide figures remain slightly elevated compared with last year's historically low pace. Chicago recorded 210 homicides through the end of June, an increase of nearly 6% over the same period in 2025, according to WTTW News. The outlet also reported 686 shootings and 858 shooting victims citywide during the first half of the year, including 139 shootings and 43 homicides in June alone.

At the same time, other crime categories have fallen. Reported robberies dropped 27% and armed robberies 32%, while carjackings fell 25% and burglaries declined 12%, per the same WTTW report. Chicago police also recovered 5,149 firearms from the start of the year through June, including 857 in June, and violent crime on CTA buses and trains dropped 28% compared with the prior year.

No arrests had been announced in Sunday's shooting as of the initial reports, and Wentworth Area detectives continued to investigate.
